Mark 1:21-34

MSG 21 Then they entered Capernaum. When the Sabbath arrived, Jesus lost no time in getting to the meeting place. He spent the day there teaching. NIV 21 They went to Capernaum, and when the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the synagogue and began to teach. MSG 22 They were surprised at his teaching - so forthright, so confident - not quibbling and quoting like the religion scholars. NIV 22 The people were amazed at his teaching, because he taught them as one who had authority, not as the teachers of the law. MSG 23 Suddenly, while still in the meeting place, he was interrupted by a man who was deeply disturbed and yelling out, NIV 23 Just then a man in their synagogue who was possessed by an evil spirit cried out, MSG 24 "What business do you have here with us, Jesus? Nazarene! I know what you're up to! You're the Holy One of God, and you've come to destroy us!" NIV 24 "What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" MSG 25 Jesus shut him up: "Quiet! Get out of him!" NIV 25 "Be quiet!" said Jesus sternly. "Come out of him!" MSG 26 The afflicting spirit threw the man into spasms, protesting loudly - and got out. NIV 26 The evil spirit shook the man violently and came out of him with a shriek. MSG 27 Everyone there was incredulous, buzzing with curiosity. "What's going on here? A new teaching that does what it says? He shuts up defiling, demonic spirits and sends them packing!" NIV 27 The people were all so amazed that they asked each other, "What is this? A new teaching--and with authority! He even gives orders to evil spirits and they obey him." MSG 28 News of this traveled fast and was soon all over Galilee. NIV 28 News about him spread quickly over the whole region of Galilee. MSG 29 Directly on leaving the meeting place, they came to Simon and Andrew's house, accompanied by James and John. NIV 29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. MSG 30 Simon's mother-in-law was sick in bed, burning up with fever. They told Jesus. NIV 30 Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. MSG 31 He went to her, took her hand, and raised her up. No sooner had the fever left than she was up fixing dinner for them. NIV 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them. MSG 32 That evening, after the sun was down, they brought sick and evil-afflicted people to him, NIV 32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. MSG 33 the whole city lined up at his door! NIV 33 The whole town gathered at the door, MSG 34 He cured their sick bodies and tormented spirits. Because the demons knew his true identity, he didn't let them say a word. NIV 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
