NRS 30 The apostles gathered around Jesus, and told him all that they had done and taught. NIV 30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. NRS 31 He said to them, "Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat. NIV 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest." NRS 32 And they went away in the boat to a deserted place by themselves. NIV 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. NRS 33 Now many saw them going and recognized them, and they hurried there on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them. NIV 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. NRS 34 As he went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things. NIV 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. NRS 35 When it grew late, his disciples came to him and said, "This is a deserted place, and the hour is now very late; NIV 35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. NIV 36 Send the people away so they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat." NRS 37 But he answered them, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?" NIV 37 But he answered, "You give them something to eat." They said to him, "That would take eight months of a man's wages ! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat?" NRS 38 And he said to them, "How many loaves have you? Go and see." When they had found out, they said, "Five, and two fish." NIV 38 "How many loaves do you have?" he asked. "Go and see." When they found out, they said, "Five--and two fish." NRS 39 Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass. NIV 39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
