Mark 8:11-30

NRS 11 The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, asking him for a sign from heaven, to test him. NIV 11 The Pharisees came and began to question Jesus. To test him, they asked him for a sign from heaven. NRS 12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit and said, "Why does this generation ask for a sign? Truly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation." NIV 12 He sighed deeply and said, "Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it." NRS 13 And he left them, and getting into the boat again, he went across to the other side. NIV 13 Then he left them, got back into the boat and crossed to the other side. NRS 14 Now the disciples had forgotten to bring any bread; and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. NIV 14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, except for one loaf they had with them in the boat. NRS 15 And he cautioned them, saying, "Watch out—beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod." NIV 15 "Be careful," Jesus warned them. "Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and that of Herod." NRS 16 They said to one another, "It is because we have no bread." NIV 16 They discussed this with one another and said, "It is because we have no bread." NRS 17 And becoming aware of it, Jesus said to them, "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened? NIV 17 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked them: "Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? Are your hearts hardened? NRS 18 Do you have eyes, and fail to see? Do you have ears, and fail to hear? And do you not remember? NIV 18 Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? And don't you remember? NRS 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?" They said to him, "Twelve." NIV 19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?" "Twelve," they replied. NRS 20 "And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you collect?" And they said to him, "Seven." NIV 20 "And when I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?" They answered, "Seven." NRS 21 Then he said to them, "Do you not yet understand?" NIV 21 He said to them, "Do you still not understand?" NRS 22 They came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to him and begged him to touch him. NIV 22 They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. NRS 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village; and when he had put saliva on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him, "Can you see anything?" NIV 23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man's eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, "Do you see anything?" NRS 24 And the man looked up and said, "I can see people, but they look like trees, walking." NIV 24 He looked up and said, "I see people; they look like trees walking around." NRS 25 Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again; and he looked intently and his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. NIV 25 Once more Jesus put his hands on the man's eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. NRS 26 Then he sent him away to his home, saying, "Do not even go into the village." NIV 26 Jesus sent him home, saying, "Don't go into the village. " NRS 27 Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?" NIV 27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, "Who do people say I am?" NRS 28 And they answered him, "John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." NIV 28 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." NRS 29 He asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Messiah." NIV 29 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ. " NRS 30 And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him. NIV 30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
