And David became the father of Solomon by the [wife]<note: *The word "wife" is not in the Greek text, but is implied idiomatically> of Uriah, NIV 6 and Jesse the father of King David. David was the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah's wife, LEB 7 and Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam became the father of Abijah, and Abijah became the father of Asa, NIV 7 Solomon the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asa, LEB 8 and Asa became the father of Jehoshaphat, and Jehoshaphat became the father of Joram, and Joram became the father of Uzziah, NIV 8 Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram, Jehoram the father of Uzziah, LEB 9 and Uzziah became the father of Jotham, and Jotham became the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz became the father of Hezekiah, NIV 9 Uzziah the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah, LEB 10 and Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, and Manasseh became the father of Amon, and Amon became the father of Josiah, NIV 10 Hezekiah the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amon, Amon the father of Josiah, LEB 11 and Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the deportation to Babylon. NIV 11 and Josiah the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon. LEB 12 And after the deportation to Babylon, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel became the father of Zerubbabel, NIV 12 After the exile to Babylon: Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel, LEB 13 and Zerubbabel became the father of Abiud, and Abiud became the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim became the father of Azor, NIV 13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud, Abiud the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor, LEB 14 and Azor became the father of Zadok, and Zadok became the father of Achim, and Achim became the father of Eliud, NIV 14 Azor the father of Zadok, Zadok the father of Akim, Akim the father of Eliud, LEB 15 and Eliud became the father of Eleazar, and Eleazar became the father of Matthan, and Matthan became the father of Jacob, NIV 15 Eliud the father of Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob, LEB 16 and Jacob became the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary by whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. NIV 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ. LEB 17 Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David [are] fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon [are] fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to the Christ [are] fourteen generations. NIV 17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Christ. LEB 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ occurred in this way. His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, [but] before they came together, she was found {to be pregnant} by the Holy Spirit. NIV 18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. LEB 19 So Joseph her husband, being righteous and not wanting to disgrace her, intended to divorce her secretly. NIV 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. LEB 20 But [as] he was considering these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary [as] your wife, for what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. NIV 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. LEB 21 And she will give birth to a son, and you will call his name 'Jesus,' because he will save his people from their sins." NIV 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." LEB 22 Now all this happened in order that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, NIV 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: LEB 23 "Behold, the virgin {will become pregnant} and will give birth to a son, and they will call his name Emmanuel," which is translated, "God with us."<note: An allusion to Isa 8:8, 10 in the Greek OT (LXX)> NIV 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us." LEB 24 And Joseph, [when he] woke up from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and he took his wife NIV 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. LEB 25 and {did not have sexual relations with} her until she gave birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus. NIV 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
