WNT 18 The circumstances of the birth of Jesus Christ were these. After his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they were united in marriage, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. NIV 18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. WNT 19 But Joseph her husband, being a kind-hearted man and unwilling publicly to disgrace her, had determined to release her privately from the betrothal. NIV 19 Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. WNT 20 But while he was contemplating this step, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to bring home your wife Mary, for she is with child through the Holy Spirit. NIV 20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. WNT 21 She will give birth to a Son, and you are to call His name JESUS for He it is who will save His People from their sins." NIV 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." WNT 22 All this took place in fulfilment of what the Lord had spoken through the Prophet, NIV 22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: WNT 23 "Mark! The maiden will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call His name Immanuel" --a word which signifies `God with us'. NIV 23 "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us." WNT 24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded, and brought home his wife, NIV 24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. WNT 25 but did not live with her until she had given birth to a son. The child's name he called JESUS. NIV 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
