Matthew 11

NRS 1 Now when Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and proclaim his message in their cities. NIV 1 After Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in the towns of Galilee. NRS 2 When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples NIV 2 When John heard in prison what Christ was doing, he sent his disciples NRS 3 and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" NIV 3 to ask him, "Are you the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else?" NRS 4 Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: NIV 4 Jesus replied, "Go back and report to John what you hear and see: NRS 5 the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. NIV 5 The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. NRS 6 And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me." NIV 6 Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me." NRS 7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to look at? A reed shaken by the wind? NIV 7 As John's disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: "What did you go out into the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? NRS 8 What then did you go out to see? Someone dressed in soft robes? Look, those who wear soft robes are in royal palaces. NIV 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings' palaces. NRS 9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. NIV 9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. NRS 10 This is the one about whom it is written, "See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' NIV 10 This is the one about whom it is written: " 'I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.' NRS 11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. NIV 11 I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. NRS 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. NIV 12 From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it. NRS 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John came; NIV 13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. NRS 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. NIV 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. NRS 15 Let anyone with ears listen! NIV 15 He who has ears, let him hear. NRS 16 "But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, NIV 16 "To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others: NRS 17 "We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.' NRS 19 the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, "Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!' Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds." NIV 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, 'Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and "sinners." ' But wisdom is proved right by her actions." NRS 20 Then he began to reproach the cities in which most of his deeds of power had been done, because they did not repent. NIV 20 Then Jesus began to denounce the cities in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. NRS 21 "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. NIV 21 "Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. NRS 22 But I tell you, on the day of judgment it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you. NIV 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. NRS 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades. For if the deeds of power done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. NIV 23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to the skies? No, you will go down to the depths. If the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. NRS 24 But I tell you that on the day of judgment it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom than for you." NIV 24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you." NRS 25 At that time Jesus said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; NIV 25 At that time Jesus said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. NRS 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. NIV 26 Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. NRS 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. NIV 27 "All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. NRS 28 "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. NIV 28 "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. NRS 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. NIV 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. NRS 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
