NIV 1 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. NKJV 2 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, "Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath!" NIV 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath." NKJV 3 But He said to them, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: NIV 3 He answered, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? NKJV 5 Or have you not read in the law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are blameless? NIV 5 Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? NKJV 6 Yet I say to you that in this place there is One greater than the temple. NIV 6 I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. NKJV 7 But if you had known what this means, 'I desire mercy and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless. NIV 7 If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent. NKJV 8 For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." NIV 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." NKJV 9 Now when He had departed from there, He went into their synagogue. And they asked Him, saying, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"--that they might accuse Him. NIV 10 and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" NKJV 11 Then He said to them, "What man is there among you who has one sheep, and if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? NIV 11 He said to them, "If any of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will you not take hold of it and lift it out? NKJV 12 Of how much more value then is a man than a sheep? Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." NIV 12 How much more valuable is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." NKJV 13 Then He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other. NIV 13 Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out and it was completely restored, just as sound as the other. NKJV 14 Then the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him. NIV 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted how they might kill Jesus. NKJV 15 But when Jesus knew it, He withdrew from there. And great multitudes followed Him, and He healed them all. NIV 15 Aware of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many followed him, and he healed all their sick, NKJV 16 Yet He warned them not to make Him known, NIV 16 warning them not to tell who he was. NKJV 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: NIV 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: NKJV 18 "Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen, My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased! I will put My Spirit upon Him, And He will declare justice to the Gentiles. NIV 18 "Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. NKJV 19 He will not quarrel nor cry out, Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets. NIV 19 He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. NKJV 20 A bruised reed He will not break, And smoking flax He will not quench, Till He sends forth justice to victory; NIV 20 A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory. NKJV 21 And in His name Gentiles will trust." NIV 21 In his name the nations will put their hope." NKJV 22 Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and mute man both spoke and saw. NIV 22 Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see. NKJV 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, "Could this be the Son of David?" NIV 23 All the people were astonished and said, "Could this be the Son of David?" NKJV 24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, "This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons." NIV 24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons." NKJV 25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. NIV 25 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. NKJV 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? NIV 26 If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? NKJV 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. NIV 27 And if I drive out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. NKJV 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. NIV 28 But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. NKJV 29 Or how can one enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. NIV 34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. NKJV 35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. NIV 35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. NKJV 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. NIV 39 He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. NKJV 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. NIV 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. And when he comes, he finds it empty, swept, and put in order. NIV 44 Then it says, 'I will return to the house I left.' When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order.
