Matthew 14:13-36

RSV 13 Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a lonely place apart. But when the crowds heard it, they followed him on foot from the towns. NIV 13 When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. RSV 14 As he went ashore he saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. NIV 14 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. RSV 15 When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." NIV 15 As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food." RSV 16 Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." NIV 16 Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat." RSV 17 They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." NIV 17 "We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered. RSV 18 And he said, "Bring them here to me." NIV 18 "Bring them here to me," he said. RSV 19 Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. NIV 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. RSV 20 And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. NIV 20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. RSV 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. NIV 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. RSV 27 But immediately he spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear." NIV 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." RSV 28 And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." NIV 28 "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." RSV 29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; NIV 29 "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. RSV 30 but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." NIV 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" RSV 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" NIV 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" RSV 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. NIV 32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. RSV 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." NIV 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." RSV 34 And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. NIV 34 When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. RSV 35 And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent round to all that region and brought to him all that were sick, NIV 35 And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him RSV 36 and besought him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment; and as many as touched it were made well. NIV 36 and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed.
