Matthew 15

CSB 1 Then Pharisees and scribes came from Jerusalem to Jesus and asked, NIV 1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, CSB 2 "Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat!" NIV 2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!" CSB 3 He answered them, "And why do you break God's commandment because of your tradition? NIV 3 Jesus replied, "And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? CSB 4 For God said: Honor your father and your mother; and, The one who speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death. NIV 4 For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.' CSB 5 But you say, 'Whoever tells his father or mother, "Whatever benefit you might have received from me is a gift [committed to the temple]"- NIV 5 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,' CSB 6 he does not have to honor his father.' In this way, you have revoked God's word because of your tradition. NIV 6 he is not to 'honor his father ' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. CSB 7 Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said: NIV 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: CSB 8 These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. NIV 8 " 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. CSB 9 They worship Me in vain, teaching as doctrines the commands of men. " NIV 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'" CSB 10 Summoning the crowd, He told them, "Listen and understand: NIV 10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. CSB 11 It's not what goes into the mouth that defiles a man, but what comes out of the mouth, this defiles a man." NIV 11 What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.' " CSB 12 Then the disciples came up and told Him, "Do You know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard this statement?" NIV 12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?" CSB 13 He replied, "Every plant that My heavenly Father didn't plant will be uprooted. NIV 13 He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. CSB 14 Leave them alone! They are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit." NIV 14 Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit." CSB 15 Then Peter replied to Him, "Explain this parable to us." NIV 15 Peter said, "Explain the parable to us." CSB 16 "Are even you still lacking in understanding?" He asked. NIV 16 "Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them. CSB 17 "Don't you realize that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is eliminated? NIV 17 "Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? CSB 18 But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a man. NIV 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' CSB 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies. NIV 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. CSB 20 These are the things that defile a man, but eating with unwashed hands does not defile a man." NIV 20 These are what make a man 'unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him 'unclean.' " CSB 21 When Jesus left there, He withdrew to the area of Tyre and Sidon. NIV 21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. CSB 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came and kept crying out, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David! My daughter is cruelly tormented by a demon." NIV 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession." CSB 23 Yet He did not say a word to her. So His disciples approached Him and urged Him, "Send her away because she cries out after us." NIV 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us." CSB 24 He replied, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." NIV 24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." CSB 25 But she came, knelt before Him, and said, "Lord, help me!" NIV 25 The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. CSB 26 He answered, "It isn't right to take the children's bread and throw it to their dogs." NIV 26 He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs." CSB 27 "Yes, Lord," she said, "yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table!" NIV 27 "Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." CSB 28 Then Jesus replied to her, "Woman, your faith is great. Let it be done for you as you want." And from that moment her daughter was cured. NIV 28 Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour. CSB 29 Moving on from there, Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee. He went up on a mountain and sat there, NIV 29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. CSB 30 and large crowds came to Him, having with them the lame, the blind, the deformed, those unable to speak, and many others. They put them at His feet, and He healed them. NIV 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. CSB 31 So the crowd was amazed when they saw those unable to speak talking, the deformed restored, the lame walking, and the blind seeing. And they gave glory to the God of Israel. NIV 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. CSB 32 Now Jesus summoned His disciples and said, "I have compassion on the crowd, because they've already stayed with Me three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away hungry; otherwise they might collapse on the way." NIV 32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way." CSB 33 The disciples said to Him, "Where could we get enough bread in this desolate place to fill such a crowd?" NIV 33 His disciples answered, "Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?" CSB 34 "How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked them. "Seven," they said, "and a few small fish." NIV 34 "How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they replied, "and a few small fish." CSB 35 After commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground, NIV 35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. CSB 36 He took the seven loaves and the fish, and He gave thanks, broke them, and kept on giving them to the disciples, and the disciples [gave them] to the crowds. NIV 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. CSB 37 They all ate and were filled. Then they collected the leftover pieces-seven large baskets full. NIV 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. CSB 38 Now those who ate were 4,000 men, besides women and children. NIV 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand, besides women and children. CSB 39 After dismissing the crowds, He got into the boat and went to the region of Magadan. NIV 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.
