Matthew 15

NAS 1 Then some Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem and said, NIV 1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, NAS 2 "Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders? For they do not wash their hands when they eat bread." NIV 2 "Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don't wash their hands before they eat!" NAS 3 And He answered and said to them, "Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? NIV 3 Jesus replied, "And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? NAS 4 "For God said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.' NIV 4 For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.' NAS 5 "But you say, 'Whoever says to his father or mother, "Whatever I have that would help you has been given to God," NIV 5 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,' NAS 6 he is not to honor his father or his mother .' And by this you invalidated the word of God for the sake of your tradition. NIV 6 he is not to 'honor his father ' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. NAS 7 "You hypocrites, rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you: NIV 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: NAS 8 'THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS, BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME. NIV 8 " 'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. NAS 9 'BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME, TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.' " NIV 9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'" NAS 10 After Jesus called the crowd to Him, He said to them, "Hear and understand. NIV 10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. NAS 11 "It is not what enters into the mouth that defiles the man, but what proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man." NIV 11 What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.' " NAS 12 Then the disciples came and said to Him, "Do You know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this statement?" NIV 12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?" NAS 13 But He answered and said, "Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be uprooted. NIV 13 He replied, "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. NAS 14 "Let them alone; they are blind guides of the blind. And if a blind man guides a blind man, both will fall into a pit." NIV 14 Leave them; they are blind guides. If a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit." NAS 15 Peter said to Him, "Explain the parable to us." NIV 15 Peter said, "Explain the parable to us." NAS 16 Jesus said, "Are you still lacking in understanding also? NIV 16 "Are you still so dull?" Jesus asked them. NAS 17 "Do you not understand that everything that goes into the mouth passes into the stomach, and is eliminated ? NIV 17 "Don't you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? NAS 18 "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. NIV 18 But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' NAS 19 "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. NIV 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. NAS 20 "These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man." NIV 20 These are what make a man 'unclean'; but eating with unwashed hands does not make him 'unclean.' " NAS 21 Jesus went away from there, and withdrew into the district of Tyre and Sidon. NIV 21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre and Sidon. NAS 22 And a Canaanite woman from that region came out and began to cry out, saying, "Have mercy on me, Lord , Son of David; my daughter is cruelly demon-possessed." NIV 22 A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession." NAS 23 But He did not answer her a word. And His disciples came and implored Him, saying, "Send her away, because she keeps shouting at us." NIV 23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us." NAS 24 But He answered and said, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." NIV 24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." NAS 25 But she came and began to bow down before Him, saying, "Lord , help me!" NIV 25 The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. NAS 26 And He answered and said, "It is not good to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." NIV 26 He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs." NAS 27 But she said, "Yes, Lord ; but even the dogs feed on the crumbs which fall from their masters' table." NIV 27 "Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." NAS 28 Then Jesus said to her, "O woman, your faith is great; it shall be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed at once . NIV 28 Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour. NAS 29 Departing from there, Jesus went along by the Sea of Galilee, and having gone up on the mountain, He was sitting there. NIV 29 Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. NAS 30 And large crowds came to Him, bringing with them those who were lame, crippled, blind, mute, and many others, and they laid them down at His feet; and He healed them. NIV 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them. NAS 31 So the crowd marveled as they saw the mute speaking, the crippled restored, and the lame walking, and the blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel. NIV 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. NAS 32 And Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said, "I feel compassion for the people, because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat; and I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way." NIV 32 Jesus called his disciples to him and said, "I have compassion for these people; they have already been with me three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, or they may collapse on the way." NAS 33 The disciples said to Him, "Where would we get so many loaves in this desolate place to satisfy such a large crowd?" NIV 33 His disciples answered, "Where could we get enough bread in this remote place to feed such a crowd?" NAS 34 And Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" And they said, "Seven, and a few small fish." NIV 34 "How many loaves do you have?" Jesus asked. "Seven," they replied, "and a few small fish." NAS 35 And He directed the people to sit down on the ground; NIV 35 He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. NAS 36 and He took the seven loaves and the fish; and giving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. NIV 36 Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, and when he had given thanks, he broke them and gave them to the disciples, and they in turn to the people. NAS 37 And they all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up what was left over of the broken pieces, seven large baskets full. NIV 37 They all ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. NAS 38 And those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children. NIV 38 The number of those who ate was four thousand, besides women and children. NAS 39 And sending away the crowds, Jesus got into the boat and came to the region of Magadan. NIV 39 After Jesus had sent the crowd away, he got into the boat and went to the vicinity of Magadan.
