Matthew 16

NAS 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. NIV 1 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven. NAS 2 But He replied to them, "When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.' NIV 2 He replied, "When evening comes, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,' NAS 3 "And in the morning, 'There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.' Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times? NIV 3 and in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.' You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. NAS 4 "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah." And He left them and went away. NIV 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away. NAS 5 And the disciples came to the other side of the sea, but they had forgotten to bring any bread. NIV 5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. NAS 6 And Jesus said to them, "Watch out and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." NIV 6 "Be careful," Jesus said to them. "Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." NAS 7 They began to discuss this among themselves, saying, "He said that because we did not bring any bread." NIV 7 They discussed this among themselves and said, "It is because we didn't bring any bread." NAS 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, "You men of little faith, why do you discuss among yourselves that you have no bread? NIV 8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, "You of little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? NAS 9 "Do you not yet understand or remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets full you picked up? NIV 9 Do you still not understand? Don't you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? NAS 10 "Or the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many large baskets full you picked up? NIV 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered? NAS 11 "How is it that you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread? But beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees." NIV 11 How is it you don't understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." NAS 12 Then they understood that He did not say to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. NIV 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. NAS 13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" NIV 13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" NAS 14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets." NIV 14 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." NAS 15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" NIV 15 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" NAS 16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." NIV 16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." NAS 17 And Jesus said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. NIV 17 Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. NAS 18 "I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. NIV 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. NAS 19 "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." NIV 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." NAS 20 Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ. NIV 20 Then he warned his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ. NAS 21 From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. NIV 21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. NAS 22 Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "God forbid it, Lord ! This shall never happen to You." NIV 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. "Never, Lord!" he said. "This shall never happen to you!" NAS 23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God's interests, but man's." NIV 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." NAS 24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. NIV 24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. NAS 25 "For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. NIV 25 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it. NAS 26 "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? NIV 26 What good will it be for a man if he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? NAS 27 "For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS. NIV 27 For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done. NAS 28 "Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom." NIV 28 I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
