Matthew 19:1-10

ESV 1 Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan. NIV 1 When Jesus had finished saying these things, he left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. ESV 2 And large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. NIV 2 Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there. ESV 3 And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?" NIV 3 Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?" ESV 4 He answered, "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, NIV 4 "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' ESV 5 and said, 'Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? NIV 5 and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh' ? ESV 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate." NIV 6 So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate." ESV 7 They said to him, "Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?" NIV 7 "Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?" ESV 8 He said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. NIV 8 Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning. ESV 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery." NIV 9 I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery." ESV 10 The disciples said to him, "If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry." NIV 10 The disciples said to him, "If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry."
