Matthew 2

LEB 1 Now [after] Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, NIV 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem LEB 2 saying, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star at its rising and have come to worship him." NIV 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." LEB 3 And [when] King Herod heard [it], he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him, NIV 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. LEB 4 and [after] calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired from them where the Christ was to be born. NIV 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. LEB 5 So they said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet, NIV 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: LEB 6 'And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for from you will go out a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.'" NIV 6 " 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' " LEB 7 Then Herod secretly summoned the wise men [and] determined precisely from them the time [when] the star appeared. NIV 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. LEB 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem [and] said, "Go, inquire carefully concerning the child, and when you have found [him], report to me so that I also may come [and] worship him." NIV 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him." LEB 9 [After] they listened to the king, they went out, and behold, the star which they had seen at its rising led them until it came [and] stood above [the place] where the child was. NIV 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. LEB 10 Now [when they] saw the star, they rejoiced [with] very great joy. NIV 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. LEB 11 And [when they] came into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down [and] worshiped him. And opening their treasure boxes, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh. NIV 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. LEB 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they went back to their [own] country by another route. NIV 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route. LEB 13 Now [after] they had gone away, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph, saying, "Get up, take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to seek the child to destroy him." NIV 13 When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." LEB 14 So he got up [and] took the child and his mother during the night and went away to Egypt. NIV 14 So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, LEB 15 And he was there until the death of Herod, in order that what was said by the Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, "Out of Egypt I called my son." NIV 15 where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Out of Egypt I called my son." LEB 16 Then Herod, [when he] saw that he had been deceived by the wise men, became very angry, and he sent [soldiers] [and] executed all the children in Bethlehem and in all the region [around] it from [the age of] two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined precisely from the wise men. NIV 16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. LEB 17 Then what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled, saying, NIV 17 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: LEB 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, and she did not want to be comforted, because {they exist no longer}." NIV 18 "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more." LEB 19 Now [after] Herod had died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, NIV 19 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt LEB 20 saying, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the life of the child are dead." NIV 20 and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead." LEB 21 So he got up [and] took the child and his mother and {entered} the land of Israel. NIV 21 So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. LEB 22 But [when he] heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream, he took refuge in the regions of Galilee. NIV 22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the district of Galilee, LEB 23 And he came [and] lived in a town called Nazareth, in order that what was said by the prophets would be fulfilled: "He will be called a Nazarene." NIV 23 and he went and lived in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what was said through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."
