Matthew 20:1-16

CEB 1 “The kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. NRS 1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. CEB 2 After he agreed with the workers to pay them a denarion, he sent them into his vineyard. NRS 2 After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. CEB 3 “Then he went out around nine in the morning and saw others standing around the marketplace doing nothing. NRS 3 When he went out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace; CEB 4 He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I'll pay you whatever is right.' NRS 4 and he said to them, "You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.' So they went. CEB 5 And they went. “Again around noon and then at three in the afternoon, he did the same thing. NRS 5 When he went out again about noon and about three o'clock, he did the same. CEB 6 Around five in the afternoon he went and found others standing around, and he said to them, ‘Why are you just standing around here doing nothing all day long?' NRS 6 And about five o'clock he went out and found others standing around; and he said to them, "Why are you standing here idle all day?' CEB 7 “‘Because nobody has hired us,' they replied. “He responded, ‘You also go into the vineyard.' NRS 7 They said to him, "Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, "You also go into the vineyard.' CEB 8 “When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the workers and give them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and moving on finally to the first.' NRS 8 When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, "Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.' CEB 9 When those who were hired at five in the afternoon came, each one received a denarion. NRS 9 When those hired about five o'clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. CEB 10 Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more. But each of them also received a denarion. NRS 10 Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. CEB 11 When they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, NRS 11 And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, CEB 12 ‘These who were hired last worked one hour, and they received the same pay as we did even though we had to work the whole day in the hot sun.' NRS 12 saying, "These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.' CEB 13 "But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I did you no wrong. Didn't I agree to pay you a denarion? NRS 13 But he replied to one of them, "Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? CEB 14 Take what belongs to you and go. I want to give to this one who was hired last the same as I give to you. NRS 14 Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. CEB 15 Don't I have the right to do what I want with what belongs to me? Or are you resentful because I'm generous?' NRS 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?' CEB 16 So those who are last will be first. And those who are first will be last." NRS 16 So the last will be first, and the first will be last."
