CSB 18 Early in the morning, as He was returning to the city, He was hungry. NIV 18 Early in the morning, as he was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. CSB 19 Seeing a lone fig tree by the road, He went up to it and found nothing on it except leaves. And He said to it, "May no fruit ever come from you again!" At once the fig tree withered. NIV 19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, "May you never bear fruit again!" Immediately the tree withered. CSB 20 When the disciples saw it, they were amazed and said, "How did the fig tree wither so quickly?" NIV 20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. "How did the fig tree wither so quickly?" they asked. CSB 21 Jesus answered them, "I assure you: If you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you tell this mountain, 'Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,' it will be done. NIV 21 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done. CSB 22 And if you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." NIV 22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer." CSB 23 When He entered the temple complex, the chief priests and the elders of the people came up to Him as He was teaching and said, "By what authority are You doing these things? Who gave You this authority?" NIV 23 Jesus entered the temple courts, and, while he was teaching, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. "By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "And who gave you this authority?" CSB 24 Jesus answered them, "I will also ask you one question, and if you answer it for Me, then I will tell you by what authority I do these things. NIV 24 Jesus replied, "I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. CSB 25 Where did John's baptism come from? From heaven or from men?" They began to argue among themselves, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' NIV 25 John's baptism--where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?" They discussed it among themselves and said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?' CSB 26 But if we say, 'From men,' we're afraid of the crowd, because everyone thought John was a prophet." NIV 26 But if we say, 'From men'--we are afraid of the people, for they all hold that John was a prophet." CSB 27 So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." And He said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things. NIV 27 So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Then he said, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things. CSB 28 "But what do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'My son, go, work in the vineyard today.' NIV 28 "What do you think? There was a man who had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.' CSB 29 "He answered, 'I don't want to!' Yet later he changed his mind and went. NIV 29 " 'I will not,' he answered, but later he changed his mind and went. CSB 30 Then the man went to the other and said the same thing. " 'I will, sir,' he answered. But he didn't go. NIV 30 "Then the father went to the other son and said the same thing. He answered, 'I will, sir,' but he did not go. CSB 31 "Which of the two did his father's will?" "The first," they said. Jesus said to them, "I assure you: Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you! NIV 31 "Which of the two did what his father wanted?" "The first," they answered. Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you. CSB 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn't believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him, but you, when you saw it, didn't even change your minds then and believe him. NIV 32 For John came to you to show you the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. And even after you saw this, you did not repent and believe him. CSB 33 "Listen to another parable: There was a man, a landowner, who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a winepress in it, and built a watchtower. He leased it to tenant farmers and went away. NIV 33 "Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and went away on a journey. CSB 34 When the grape harvest drew near, he sent his slaves to the farmers to collect his fruit. NIV 34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit. CSB 35 But the farmers took his slaves, beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. NIV 35 "The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. CSB 36 Again, he sent other slaves, more than the first group, and they did the same to them. NIV 36 Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. CSB 37 Finally, he sent his son to them. 'They will respect my son,' he said. NIV 37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. 'They will respect my son,' he said. CSB 38 "But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said among themselves, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance!' NIV 38 "But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, 'This is the heir. Come, let's kill him and take his inheritance.' CSB 39 So they seized him and threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. NIV 39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. CSB 40 Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those farmers?" NIV 40 "Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" CSB 41 "He will completely destroy those terrible men," they told Him, "and lease his vineyard to other farmers who will give him his produce at the harvest." NIV 41 "He will bring those wretches to a wretched end," they replied, "and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time." CSB 42 Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This came from the Lord and is wonderful in our eyes ? NIV 42 Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the Scriptures: " 'The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes' ? CSB 43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing its fruit. [ NIV 43 "Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit.
