Matthew 25

MSG 1 "God's kingdom is like ten young virgins who took oil lamps and went out to greet the bridegroom. NIV 1 "At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. MSG 2 Five were silly and five were smart. NIV 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. MSG 3 The silly virgins took lamps, but no extra oil. NIV 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. MSG 4 The smart virgins took jars of oil to feed their lamps. NIV 4 The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. MSG 5 The bridegroom didn't show up when they expected him, and they all fell asleep. NIV 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. MSG 6 "In the middle of the night someone yelled out, 'He's here! The bridegroom's here! Go out and greet him!' NIV 6 "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!' MSG 7 "The ten virgins got up and got their lamps ready. NIV 7 "Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. MSG 8 The silly virgins said to the smart ones, 'Our lamps are going out; lend us some of your oil.' NIV 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.' MSG 9 "They answered, 'There might not be enough to go around; go buy your own.' NIV 9 " 'No,' they replied, 'there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.' MSG 10 "They did, but while they were out buying oil, the bridegroom arrived. When everyone who was there to greet him had gone into the wedding feast, the door was locked. NIV 10 "But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. MSG 11 "Much later, the other virgins, the silly ones, showed up and knocked on the door, saying, 'Master, we're here. Let us in.' NIV 11 "Later the others also came. 'Sir! Sir!' they said. 'Open the door for us!' MSG 12 "He answered, 'Do I know you? I don't think I know you.' NIV 12 "But he replied, 'I tell you the truth, I don't know you.' MSG 13 "So stay alert. You have no idea when he might arrive. NIV 13 "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour. MSG 14 "It's also like a man going off on an extended trip. He called his servants together and delegated responsibilities. NIV 14 "Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his property to them. MSG 15 To one he gave five thousand dollars, to another two thousand, to a third one thousand, depending on their abilities. Then he left. NIV 15 To one he gave five talents of money, to another two talents, and to another one talent, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. MSG 16 Right off, the first servant went to work and doubled his master's investment. NIV 16 The man who had received the five talents went at once and put his money to work and gained five more. MSG 17 The second did the same. NIV 17 So also, the one with the two talents gained two more. MSG 18 But the man with the single thousand dug a hole and carefully buried his master's money. NIV 18 But the man who had received the one talent went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master's money. MSG 19 "After a long absence, the master of those three servants came back and settled up with them. NIV 19 "After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. MSG 20 The one given five thousand dollars showed him how he had doubled his investment. NIV 20 The man who had received the five talents brought the other five. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more.' MSG 21 His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.' NIV 21 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' MSG 22 "The servant with the two thousand showed how he also had doubled his master's investment. NIV 22 "The man with the two talents also came. 'Master,' he said, 'you entrusted me with two talents; see, I have gained two more.' MSG 23 His master commended him: 'Good work! You did your job well. From now on be my partner.' NIV 23 "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' MSG 24 "The servant given one thousand said, 'Master, I know you have high standards and hate careless ways, that you demand the best and make no allowances for error. NIV 24 "Then the man who had received the one talent came. 'Master,' he said, 'I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. MSG 25 I was afraid I might disappoint you, so I found a good hiding place and secured your money. Here it is, safe and sound down to the last cent.' NIV 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.' MSG 26 "The master was furious. 'That's a terrible way to live! It's criminal to live cautiously like that! If you knew I was after the best, why did you do less than the least? NIV 26 "His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? MSG 27 The least you could have done would have been to invest the sum with the bankers, where at least I would have gotten a little interest. NIV 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. MSG 28 "'Take the thousand and give it to the one who risked the most. And get rid of this "play-it-safe" who won't go out on a limb. NIV 28 " 'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. MSG 29 NIV 29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. MSG 30 Throw him out into utter darkness.' NIV 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' MSG 31 "When he finally arrives, blazing in beauty and all his angels with him, the Son of Man will take his place on his glorious throne. NIV 31 "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. MSG 32 Then all the nations will be arranged before him and he will sort the people out, much as a shepherd sorts out sheep and goats, NIV 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. MSG 33 putting sheep to his right and goats to his left. NIV 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. MSG 34 "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what's coming to you in this kingdom. It's been ready for you since the world's foundation. NIV 34 "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. MSG 35 And here's why: I was hungry and you fed me, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, I was homeless and you gave me a room, NIV 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, MSG 36 I was shivering and you gave me clothes, I was sick and you stopped to visit, I was in prison and you came to me.' NIV 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' MSG 37 "Then those 'sheep' are going to say, 'Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry and feed you, thirsty and give you a drink? NIV 37 "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? MSG 38 And when did we ever see you sick or in prison and come to you?' NIV 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? MSG 39 NIV 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' MSG 40 Then the King will say, 'I'm telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me - you did it to me.' NIV 40 "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' MSG 41 "Then he will turn to the 'goats,' the ones on his left, and say, 'Get out, worthless goats! You're good for nothing but the fires of hell. NIV 41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. MSG 42 And why? Because - I was hungry and you gave me no meal, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, NIV 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, MSG 43 I was homeless and you gave me no bed, I was shivering and you gave me no clothes, Sick and in prison, and you never visited.' NIV 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' MSG 44 "Then those 'goats' are going to say, 'Master, what are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or homeless or shivering or sick or in prison and didn't help?' NIV 44 "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' MSG 45 "He will answer them, 'I'm telling the solemn truth: Whenever you failed to do one of these things to someone who was being overlooked or ignored, that was me - you failed to do it to me.' NIV 45 "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' MSG 46 "Then those 'goats' will be herded to their eternal doom, but the 'sheep' to their eternal reward." NIV 46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."
