Matthew 26

HNV 1 It happened, when Yeshua had finished all these words, that he said to his talmidim, NIV 1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, HNV 2 "You know that after two days the Pesach is coming, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified." NIV 2 "As you know, the Passover is two days away--and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified." HNV 3 Then the chief Kohanim, the Sofrim, and the Zakenim of the people were gathered together in the court of the Kohen Gadol, who was called Kayafa. NIV 3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, HNV 4 They took counsel together that they might take Yeshua by deceit, and kill him. NIV 4 and they plotted to arrest Jesus in some sly way and kill him. HNV 5 But they said, "Not during the feast, lest a riot occur among the people." NIV 5 "But not during the Feast," they said, "or there may be a riot among the people." HNV 6 Now when Yeshua was in Beit-Anyah, in the house of Shim`on the leper, NIV 6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of a man known as Simon the Leper, HNV 7 a woman came to him having an alabaster jar of very expensive ointment, and she poured it on his head as he sat at the table. NIV 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table. HNV 8 But when his talmidim saw it, they were indignant, saying, "Why this waste? NIV 8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. HNV 9 For this ointment might have been sold for much, and given to the poor." NIV 9 "This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor." HNV 10 But Yeshua, knowing this, said to them, "Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for me. NIV 10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. HNV 11 For you always have the poor with you; but you don't always have me. NIV 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. HNV 12 For in that she poured this ointment on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. NIV 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. HNV 13 Most assuredly I tell you, wherever this Good News will be preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of for a memorial of her." NIV 13 I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her." HNV 14 Then one of the twelve, who was called Yehudah from K'riot, went to the chief Kohanim, NIV 14 Then one of the Twelve--the one called Judas Iscariot--went to the chief priests HNV 15 and said, "What are you willing to give me, and I will deliver him to you?" They weighed out for him thirty pieces of silver. NIV 15 and asked, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty silver coins. HNV 16 From that time he sought opportunity to betray him. NIV 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over. HNV 17 Now on the first day of matzah, the talmidim came to Yeshua, saying to him, "Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Pesach?" NIV 17 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?" HNV 18 He said, "Go into the city to a certain person, and tell him, 'The Teacher says, "My time is at hand. I will keep the Pesach at your house with my talmidim."'" NIV 18 He replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.' " HNV 19 The talmidim did as Yeshua commanded them, and they prepared the Pesach. NIV 19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover. HNV 20 Now when evening had come, he was reclining at the table with the twelve talmidim. NIV 20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. HNV 21 As they were eating, he said, "Most assuredly I tell you that one of you will betray me." NIV 21 And while they were eating, he said, "I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me." HNV 22 They were exceedingly sorrowful, and each began to ask him, "It isn't me, is it, Lord?" NIV 22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely not I, Lord?" HNV 23 He answered, "He who dipped his hand with me in the dish, the same will betray me. NIV 23 Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. HNV 24 The Son of Man goes, even as it is written of him, but woe to that man through whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for that man if he had not been born." NIV 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born." HNV 25 Yehudah, who betrayed him, answered, "It isn't me, is it, Rabbi?" He said to him, "You said it." NIV 25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" Jesus answered, "Yes, it is you." HNV 26 As they were eating, Yeshua took bread, gave thanks for it, and broke it. He gave to the talmidim, and said, "Take, eat; this is my body." NIV 26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." HNV 27 He took the cup, gave thanks, and gave to them, saying, "Drink all of it, NIV 27 Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. HNV 28 for this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for many for the remission of sins. NIV 28 This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. HNV 29 But I tell you that I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on, until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom." NIV 29 I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father's kingdom." HNV 30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. NIV 30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. HNV 31 Then Yeshua said to them, "All of you will be offended by me tonight, for it is written, 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered abroad.' NIV 31 Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' HNV 32 But after I am raised up, I will go before you into the Galil." NIV 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." HNV 33 But Kefa answered him, "Even if all will be offended by you, I will never be offended." NIV 33 Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will." HNV 34 Yeshua said to him, "Most assuredly I tell you, that tonight, before the cock crows, you will deny me three times." NIV 34 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." HNV 35 Kefa said to him, "Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you." All of the talmidim also said likewise. NIV 35 But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same. HNV 36 Then Yeshua came with them to a place called Gat-Shemanim, and said to his talmidim, "Sit here, while I go there and pray." NIV 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." HNV 37 He took with him Kefa and the two sons of Zavdai, and began to be sorrowful and severely troubled. NIV 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. HNV 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch with me." NIV 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." HNV 39 He went forward a little, fell on his face, and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass away from me; nevertheless, not what I desire, but what you desire." NIV 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." HNV 40 He came to the talmidim, and found them sleeping, and said to Kefa, "What, couldn't you watch with me for one hour? NIV 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. HNV 41 Watch and pray, that you don't enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." NIV 41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." HNV 42 Again, a second time he went away, and prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cup can't pass away from me unless I drink it, your desire be done." NIV 42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done." HNV 43 He came again and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. NIV 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. HNV 44 He left them again, went away, and prayed a third time, saying the same words. NIV 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. HNV 45 Then he came to his talmidim, and said to them, "Sleep on now, and take your rest. Behold, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. NIV 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. HNV 46 Arise, let us be going. Behold, he who betrays me is at hand." NIV 46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!" HNV 47 While he was still speaking, behold, Yehudah, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and clubs, from the chief Kohen and Zakenim of the people. NIV 47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. HNV 48 Now he who betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, "Whoever I will kiss, that is he. Take him." NIV 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." HNV 49 Immediately he came to Yeshua, and said, "Hail, Rabbi!" and kissed him. NIV 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him. HNV 50 Yeshua said to him, "Friend, why are you here?" Then they came and laid hands on Yeshua, and took him. NIV 50 Jesus replied, "Friend, do what you came for." Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. HNV 51 Behold, one of those who were with Yeshua stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck the servant of the Kohen Gadol, and struck off his ear. NIV 51 With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. HNV 52 Then Yeshua said to him, "Put your sword back into its place, for all those who take the sword will die by the sword. NIV 52 "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. HNV 53 Or do you think that I can't ask my Father, and he would even now send me more than twelve legions of angels? NIV 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? HNV 54 How then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that it must be so?" NIV 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?" HNV 55 In that hour Yeshua said to the multitudes, "Have you come out as against a robber with swords and clubs to seize me? I sat daily in the temple teaching, and you didn't arrest me. NIV 55 At that time Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. HNV 56 But all this has happened, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the talmidim left him, and fled. NIV 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. HNV 57 Those who had taken Yeshua led him away to Kayafa, the Kohen Gadol, where the Sofrim and the Zakenim were gathered together. NIV 57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. HNV 58 But Kefa followed him from a distance, to the court of the Kohen Gadol, and entered in and sat with the officers, to see the end. NIV 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. HNV 59 Now the chief Kohanim, the Zakenim, and the whole council sought false testimony against Yeshua, that they might put him to death; NIV 59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. HNV 60 and they found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward, NIV 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward HNV 61 and said, "This man said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.'" NIV 61 and declared, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.' " HNV 62 The Kohen Gadol stood up, and answered him, "Have you no answer? What is this that these testify against you?" NIV 62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" HNV 63 But Yeshua held his shalom. The Kohen Gadol answered him, "I adjure you by the living God, that you tell us whether you are the Messiah, the Son of God." NIV 63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." HNV 64 Yeshua said to him, "You have said it. Nevertheless, I tell you, henceforth you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of the sky." NIV 64 "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." HNV 65 Then the Kohen Gadol tore his clothing, saying, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Behold, now you have heard his blasphemy. NIV 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. HNV 66 What do you think?" They answered, "He is worthy of death!" NIV 66 What do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered. HNV 67 Then they spit in his face and beat him with their fists, and some slapped him, NIV 67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him HNV 68 saying, "Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you?" NIV 68 and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?" HNV 69 Now Kefa was sitting outside in the court, and a maid came to him, saying, "You were also with Yeshua, from the Galil!" NIV 69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said. HNV 70 But he denied before them all, saying, "I don't know what you are talking about." NIV 70 But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. HNV 71 When he had gone out onto the porch, someone else saw him, and said to those who were there, "This man also was with Yeshua of Natzeret." NIV 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth." HNV 72 Again he denied with an oath, "I don't know the man." NIV 72 He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!" HNV 73 After a little while those who stood by came and said to Kefa, "Surely you are also one of them, for your speech makes you known." NIV 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away." HNV 74 Then began he to curse and to swear, "I don't know the man!" Immediately the cock crowed. NIV 74 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. HNV 75 Kefa remembered the word which Yeshua had said to him, "Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times." He went out and wept bitterly. NIV 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.
