NAS 8 But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, "Why this waste? NIV 8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. NAS 9 "For this perfume might have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor." NIV 9 "This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor." She has done a beautiful thing to me. NAS 11 "For you always have the poor with you; but you do not always have Me. NIV 11 The poor you will always have with you, but you will not always have me. NAS 12 "For when she poured this perfume on My body, she did it to prepare Me for burial. NIV 12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. NAS 13 "Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be spoken of in memory of her." NIV 13 I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her." NAS 14 Then one of the twelve, named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests NIV 14 Then one of the Twelve--the one called Judas Iscariot--went to the chief priests NAS 15 and said, "What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?" And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him. NIV 15 and asked, "What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty silver coins. NAS 16 From then on he began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus. NIV 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over. NAS 17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?" " NIV 18 He replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, 'The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.' NAS 24 "The Son of Man is to go, just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born." NIV 24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born." NAS 25 And Judas, who was betraying Him, said, "Surely it is not I, Rabbi?" Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself." NIV 25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely not I, Rabbi?" Jesus answered, "Yes, it is you." NAS 30 After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. NIV 30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. NAS 31 Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, 'I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD, AND THE SHEEP OF THE FLOCK SHALL BE SCATTERED.' NIV 31 Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: " 'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' NAS 32 "But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee." NIV 32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee." NAS 34 Jesus said to him, "Truly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." NIV 34 "I tell you the truth," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." NAS 35 Peter said to Him, "Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You." All the disciples said the same thing too. NIV 35 But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same. NAS 36 Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray." NIV 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me." NAS 39 And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will." NIV 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will." NAS 40 And He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour? NIV 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. NAS 41 "Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." NIV 41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." NAS 42 He went away again a second time and prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cannot pass away unless I drink it, Your will be done." NIV 42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done." NAS 43 Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. NIV 43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. NAS 44 And He left them again, and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. NIV 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing. NAS 45 Then He came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners. NIV 45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. NAS 46 "Get up, let us be going; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!" NIV 46 Rise, let us go! Here comes my betrayer!" NAS 47 While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, who came from the chief priests and elders of the people. NIV 47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. NAS 48 Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him." NIV 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." NAS 49 Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, "Hail, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. NIV 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him. NAS 50 And Jesus said to him, "Friend, do what you have come for." Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. NIV 50 Jesus replied, "Friend, do what you came for." Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. NAS 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached and drew out his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear. NIV 51 With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. NAS 52 Then Jesus said to him, "Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword. NIV 52 "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. NAS 53 "Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? NIV 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? NAS 54 "How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?" NIV 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?" NAS 55 At that time Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as you would against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. NIV 55 At that time Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. NAS 56 "But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets." Then all the disciples left Him and fled. NIV 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled. NAS 57 Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. NIV 57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. NAS 58 But Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the officers to see the outcome. NIV 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome. NAS 59 Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death. NIV 59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. NAS 60 They did not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. But later on two came forward, NIV 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forward NAS 61 and said, "This man stated, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and to rebuild it in three days.' " NIV 61 and declared, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.' " NAS 62 The high priest stood up and said to Him, "Do You not answer? What is it that these men are testifying against You?" NIV 62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" NAS 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, "I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God." NIV 63 But Jesus remained silent. The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God." NAS 64 Jesus said to him, "You have said it yourself; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN." NIV 64 "Yes, it is as you say," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven." NAS 65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; NIV 65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. NAS 66 what do you think?" They answered, "He deserves death!" NIV 66 What do you think?" "He is worthy of death," they answered. NAS 67 Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him, NIV 67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him NAS 68 and said, "Prophesy to us, You Christ; who is the one who hit You?" NIV 68 and said, "Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?" NAS 69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, "You too were with Jesus the Galilean." NIV 69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said. NAS 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, "I do not know what you are talking about." NIV 70 But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking about," he said. NAS 71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to those who were there, "This man was with Jesus of Nazareth." NIV 71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth." NAS 72 And again he denied it with an oath, "I do not know the man." NIV 72 He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!" NAS 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, "Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away ." NIV 73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away." NAS 74 Then he began to curse and swear, "I do not know the man!" And immediately a rooster crowed. NIV 74 Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed. NAS 75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, "Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times." And he went out and wept bitterly. NIV 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.
