Matthew 2:1-12

NLT 1 Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the reign of King Herod. About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in Jerusalem, asking, NIV 1 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem NLT 2 “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.” NIV 2 and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." NLT 3 King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was everyone in Jerusalem. NIV 3 When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. NLT 4 He called a meeting of the leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked, “Where is the Messiah supposed to be born?” NIV 4 When he had called together all the people's chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ was to be born. NLT 5 “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they said, “for this is what the prophet wrote: NIV 5 "In Bethlehem in Judea," they replied, "for this is what the prophet has written: NLT 6 ‘And you, O Bethlehem in the land of Judah, are not least among the ruling cities of Judah, for a ruler will come from you who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.’ ” NIV 6 " 'But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.' " NLT 7 Then Herod called for a private meeting with the wise men, and he learned from them the time when the star first appeared. NIV 7 Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. NLT 8 Then he told them, “Go to Bethlehem and search carefully for the child. And when you find him, come back and tell me so that I can go and worship him, too!” NIV 8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and make a careful search for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him." NLT 9 After this interview the wise men went their way. And the star they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem. It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the child was. NIV 9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. NLT 10 When they saw the star, they were filled with joy! NIV 10 When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. NLT 11 They entered the house and saw the child with his mother, Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasure chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. NIV 11 On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. NLT 12 When it was time to leave, they returned to their own country by another route, for God had warned them in a dream not to return to Herod. NIV 12 And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.
