RHE 1 And in those days cometh John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea. NIV 1 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea RHE 2 And saying: Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. NIV 2 and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near." RHE 3 For this is he that was spoken of by Isaias the prophet, saying: A voice of one crying in the desert, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. NIV 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah: "A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.' " RHE 4 And the same John had his garment of camel’s hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins: and his meat was locusts and wild honey. NIV 4 John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. RHE 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the country about Jordan: NIV 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. RHE 6 And were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. NIV 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. RHE 7 And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them: Ye brood of vipers, who hath shewed you to flee from the wrath to come? NIV 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? RHE 8 Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of penance. NIV 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. RHE 9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father. For I tell you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. NIV 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. RHE 10 For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doth not yield good fruit, shall be cut down, and cast into the fire. NIV 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. RHE 11 I indeed baptize you in water unto penance, but he that shall come after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire. NIV 11 "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. RHE 12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor and gather his wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. NIV 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire." RHE 13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan, unto John, to be baptized by him. NIV 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. RHE 14 But John stayed him, saying: I ought to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me? NIV 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" RHE 15 And Jesus answering, said to him: Suffer it to be so now. For so it becometh us to fulfil all justice. Then he suffered him. NIV 15 Jesus replied, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness." Then John consented. RHE 16 And Jesus being baptized, forthwith came out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened to him: and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him. NIV 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. RHE 17 And behold a voice from heaven saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. NIV 17 And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
