Matthew 5

BBE 1 And seeing great masses of people he went up into the mountain; and when he was seated his disciples came to him. NIV 1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, BBE 2 And with these words he gave them teaching, saying, NIV 2 and he began to teach them, saying: BBE 3 Happy are the poor in spirit: for the kingdom of heaven is theirs. NIV 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. BBE 4 Happy are those who are sad: for they will be comforted. NIV 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. BBE 5 Happy are the gentle: for the earth will be their heritage. NIV 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. BBE 6 Happy are those whose heart's desire is for righteousness: for they will have their desire. NIV 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. BBE 7 Happy are those who have mercy: for they will be given mercy. NIV 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. BBE 8 Happy are the clean in heart: for they will see God. NIV 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. BBE 9 Happy are the peacemakers: for they will be named sons of God. NIV 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. BBE 10 Happy are those who are attacked on account of righteousness: for the kingdom of heaven will be theirs. NIV 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. BBE 11 Happy are you when men give you a bad name, and are cruel to you, and say all evil things against you falsely, because of me. NIV 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. BBE 12 Be glad and full of joy; for great is your reward in heaven: for so were the prophets attacked who were before you. NIV 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. BBE 13 You are the salt of the earth; but if its taste goes from the salt, how will you make it salt again? it is then good for nothing but to be put out and crushed under foot by men. NIV 13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. BBE 14 You are the light of the world. A town put on a hill may be seen by all. NIV 14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. BBE 15 And a burning light is not put under a vessel, but on its table; so that its rays may be shining on all who are in the house. NIV 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. BBE 16 Even so let your light be shining before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. NIV 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. BBE 17 Let there be no thought that I have come to put an end to the law or the prophets. I have not come for destruction, but to make complete. NIV 17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. BBE 18 Truly I say to you, Till heaven and earth come to an end, not the smallest letter or part of a letter will in any way be taken from the law, till all things are done. NIV 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. BBE 19 Whoever then goes against the smallest of these laws, teaching men to do the same, will be named least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who keeps the laws, teaching others to keep them, will be named great in the kingdom of heaven. NIV 19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. BBE 20 For I say to you, If your righteousness is not greater than the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never go into the kingdom of heaven. NIV 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. BBE 21 You have knowledge that it was said in old times, You may not put to death; and, Whoever puts to death will be in danger of being judged: NIV 21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' BBE 22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be in danger of being judged; and he who says to his brother, Raca, will be in danger from the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, You foolish one, will be in danger of the hell of fire. NIV 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca, ' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. BBE 23 If then you are making an offering at the altar and there it comes to your mind that your brother has something against you, NIV 23 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, BBE 24 While your offering is still before the altar, first go and make peace with your brother, then come and make your offering. NIV 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. BBE 25 Come to an agreement quickly with him who has a cause against you at law, while you are with him on the way, for fear that he may give you up to the judge and the judge may give you to the police and you may be put into prison. NIV 25 "Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. BBE 26 Truly I say to you, You will not come out from there till you have made payment of the very last farthing. NIV 26 I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. BBE 27 You have knowledge that it was said, You may not have connection with another man's wife: NIV 27 "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' BBE 28 But I say to you that everyone whose eyes are turned on a woman with desire has had connection with her in his heart. NIV 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. BBE 29 And if your right eye is a cause of trouble to you, take it out and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell. NIV 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. BBE 30 And if your right hand is a cause of trouble to you, let it be cut off and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell. NIV 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. BBE 31 Again, it was said, Whoever puts away his wife has to give her a statement in writing for this purpose: NIV 31 "It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.' BBE 32 But I say to you that everyone who puts away his wife for any other cause but the loss of her virtue, makes her false to her husband; and whoever takes her as his wife after she is put away, is no true husband to her. NIV 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery. BBE 33 Again, you have knowledge that it was said in old times, Do not take false oaths, but give effect to your oaths to the Lord: NIV 33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' BBE 34 But I say to you, Take no oaths at all: not by the heaven, because it is the seat of God; NIV 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; BBE 35 Or by the earth, because it is the resting-place for his foot; or by Jerusalem, because it is the town of the great King. NIV 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. BBE 36 You may not take an oath by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black. NIV 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. BBE 37 But let your words be simply, Yes or No: and whatever is more than these is of the Evil One. NIV 37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. BBE 38 You have knowledge that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: NIV 38 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' BBE 39 But I say to you, Do not make use of force against an evil man; but to him who gives you a blow on the right side of your face let the left be turned. NIV 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. BBE 40 And if any man goes to law with you and takes away your coat, do not keep back your robe from him. NIV 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. BBE 41 And whoever makes you go one mile, go with him two. NIV 41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. BBE 42 Give to him who comes with a request, and keep not your property from him who would for a time make use of it. NIV 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. BBE 43 You have knowledge that it was said, Have love for your neighbour, and hate for him who is against you: NIV 43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' BBE 44 But I say to you, Have love for those who are against you, and make prayer for those who are cruel to you; NIV 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, BBE 45 So that you may be the sons of your Father in heaven; for his sun gives light to the evil and to the good, and he sends rain on the upright man and on the sinner. NIV 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. BBE 46 For if you have love for those who have love for you, what credit is it to you? do not the tax-farmers the same? NIV 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? BBE 47 And if you say, Good day, to your brothers only, what do you do more than others? do not even the Gentiles the same? NIV 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? BBE 48 Be then complete in righteousness, even as your Father in heaven is complete. NIV 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
