Matthew 5

CJB 1 Seeing the crowds, Yeshua walked up the hill. After he sat down, his talmidim came to him, NIV 1 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, CJB 2 and he began to speak. This is what he taught them: NIV 2 and he began to teach them, saying: CJB 3 "How blessed are the poor in spirit! for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. NIV 3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. CJB 4 "How blessed are those who mourn! for they will be comforted. NIV 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. CJB 5 "How blessed are the meek! for they will inherit the Land!k NIV 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. CJB 6 "How blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness! for they will be filled. NIV 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. CJB 7 "How blessed are those who show mercy! for they will be shown mercy. NIV 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. CJB 8 "How blessed are the pure in heart! for they will see God. NIV 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. CJB 9 "How blessed are those who make peace! for they will be called sons of God. NIV 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. CJB 10 "How blessed are those who are persecuted because they pursue righteousness! for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. NIV 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. CJB 11 "How blessed you are when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of vicious lies about you because you follow me! NIV 11 "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. CJB 12 Rejoice, be glad, because your reward in heaven is great -- they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way. NIV 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. CJB 13 "You are salt for the Land. But if salt becomes tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything except being thrown out for people to trample on. NIV 13 "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. CJB 14 "You are light for the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. NIV 14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. CJB 15 Likewise, when people light a lamp, they don't cover it with a bowl but put it on a lampstand, so that it shines for everyone in the house. NIV 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. CJB 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so that they may see the good things you do and praise your Father in heaven. NIV 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. CJB 17 "Don't think that I have come to abolish the Torah or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but to complete. NIV 17 "Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. CJB 18 Yes indeed! I tell you that until heaven and earth pass away, not so much as a yud or a stroke will pass from the Torah -- not until everything that must happen has happened. NIV 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. CJB 19 So whoever disobeys the least of these mitzvot and teaches others to do so will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But whoever obeys them and so teaches will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. NIV 19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. CJB 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness is far greater than that of the Torah-teachers and P'rushim, you will certainly not enter the Kingdom of Heaven! NIV 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven. CJB 21 "You have heard that our fathers were told, `Do not murder,'l and that anyone who commits murder will be subject to judgment. NIV 21 "You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.' CJB 22 But I tell you that anyone who nurses anger against his brother will be subject to judgment; that whoever calls his brother, `You good-for-nothing!' will be brought before the Sanhedrin; that whoever says, `Fool!' incurs the penalty of burning in the fire of Gei-Hinnom! NIV 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca, ' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. CJB 23 So if you are offering your gift at the Temple altar and you remember there that your brother has something against you, NIV 23 "Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, CJB 24 leave your gift where it is by the altar, and go, make peace with your brother. Then come back and offer your gift. NIV 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift. CJB 25 If someone sues you, come to terms with him quickly, while you and he are on the way to court; or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer of the court, and you may be thrown in jail! NIV 25 "Settle matters quickly with your adversary who is taking you to court. Do it while you are still with him on the way, or he may hand you over to the judge, and the judge may hand you over to the officer, and you may be thrown into prison. CJB 26 Yes indeed! I tell you, you will certainly not get out until you have paid the last penny. NIV 26 I tell you the truth, you will not get out until you have paid the last penny. CJB 27 "You have heard that our fathers were told, `Do not commit adultery.'m NIV 27 "You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' CJB 28 But I tell you that a man who even looks at a woman with the purpose of lusting after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. NIV 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. CJB 29 If your right eye makes you sin, gouge it out and throw it away! Better that you should lose one part of you than have your whole body thrown into Gei-Hinnom. NIV 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. CJB 30 And if your right hand makes you sin, cut it off and throw it away! Better that you should lose one part of you than have your whole body thrown into Gei-Hinnom. NIV 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. CJB 31 "It was said, `Whoever divorces his wife must give her a get.' NIV 31 "It has been said, 'Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a certificate of divorce.' CJB 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of fornication, makes her an adulteress; and that anyone who marries a divorcee commits adultery. NIV 32 But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, causes her to become an adulteress, and anyone who marries the divorced woman commits adultery. CJB 33 "Again, you have heard that our fathers were told, `Do not break your oath,' and `Keep your vows to ADONAI.' NIV 33 "Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, 'Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.' CJB 34 But I tell you not to swear at all -- not `by heaven,' because it is God's throne; NIV 34 But I tell you, Do not swear at all: either by heaven, for it is God's throne; CJB 35 not `by the earth,' because it is his footstool;p and not `by Yerushalayim,' because it is the city of the Great King. NIV 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. CJB 36 And don't swear by your head, because you can't make a single hair white or black. NIV 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. CJB 37 Just let your `Yes' be a simple `Yes,' and your `No' a simple `No'; anything more than this has its origin in evil. NIV 37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. CJB 38 "You have heard that our fathers were told, `Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.' NIV 38 "You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' CJB 39 But I tell you not to stand up against someone who does you wrong. On the contrary, if someone hits you on the right cheek, let him hit you on the left cheek too! NIV 39 But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. CJB 40 If someone wants to sue you for your shirt, let him have your coat as well! NIV 40 And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. CJB 41 And if a soldier forces you to carry his pack for one mile, carry it for two! NIV 41 If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. CJB 42 When someone asks you for something, give it to him; when someone wants to borrow something from you, lend it to him. NIV 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. CJB 43 "You have heard that our fathers were told, `Love your neighbors -- and hate your enemy.' NIV 43 "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' CJB 44 But I tell you, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! NIV 44 But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, CJB 45 Then you will become children of your Father in heaven. For he makes his sun shine on good and bad people alike, and he sends rain to the righteous and the unrighteous alike. NIV 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. CJB 46 What reward do you get if you love only those who love you? Why, even tax-collectors do that! NIV 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? CJB 47 And if you are friendly only to your friends, are you doing anything out of the ordinary? Even the Goyim do that! NIV 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? CJB 48 Therefore, be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. NIV 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
