Numbers 1

ASV 1 And Jehovah spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying, NIV 1 The LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said: ASV 2 Take ye the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, every male, by their polls; NIV 2 "Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one. ASV 3 from twenty years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel, thou and Aaron shall number them by their hosts. NIV 3 You and Aaron are to number by their divisions all the men in Israel twenty years old or more who are able to serve in the army. ASV 4 And with you there shall be a man of every tribe; every one head of his fathers' house. NIV 4 One man from each tribe, each the head of his family, is to help you. ASV 5 And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you. Of Reuben: Elizur the son of Shedeur. NIV 5 These are the names of the men who are to assist you: from Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; ASV 6 Of Simeon: Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. NIV 6 from Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; ASV 7 Of Judah: Nahshon the son of Amminadab. NIV 7 from Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; ASV 8 Of Issachar: Nethanel the son of Zuar. NIV 8 from Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; ASV 9 Of Zebulun: Eliab the son of Helon. NIV 9 from Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon; ASV 10 Of the children of Joseph: Of Ephraim: Elishama the son of Ammihud. Of Manasseh: Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur. NIV 10 from the sons of Joseph: from Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; from Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur; ASV 11 Of Benjamin: Abidan the son of Gideoni. NIV 11 from Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; ASV 12 Of Dan: Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai. NIV 12 from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; ASV 13 Of Asher: Pagiel the son of Ochran. NIV 13 from Asher, Pagiel son of Ocran; ASV 14 Of Gad: Eliasaph the son of Deuel. NIV 14 from Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; ASV 15 Of Naphtali: Ahira the son of Enan. NIV 15 from Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan." ASV 16 These are they that were called of the congregation, the princes of the tribes of their fathers; they were the heads of the thousands of Israel. NIV 16 These were the men appointed from the community, the leaders of their ancestral tribes. They were the heads of the clans of Israel. ASV 17 And Moses and Aaron took these men that are mentioned by name: NIV 17 Moses and Aaron took these men whose names had been given, ASV 18 And they assembled all the congregation together on the first day of the second month; and they declared their pedigrees after their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, by their polls. NIV 18 and they called the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people indicated their ancestry by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or more were listed by name, one by one, ASV 19 As Jehovah commanded Moses, so he numbered them in the wilderness of Sinai. NIV 19 as the LORD commanded Moses. And so he counted them in the Desert of Sinai: ASV 20 And the children of Reuben, Israel's first-born, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 20 From the descendants of Reuben the firstborn son of Israel: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 21 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Reuben, were forty and six thousand and five hundred. NIV 21 The number from the tribe of Reuben was 46,500. ASV 22 Of the children of Simeon, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, those that were numbered thereof, according to the number of the names, by their polls, every male from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 22 From the descendants of Simeon: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were counted and listed by name, one by one, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 23 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Simeon, were fifty and nine thousand and three hundred. NIV 23 The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300. ASV 24 Of the children of Gad, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 24 From the descendants of Gad: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 25 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Gad, were forty and five thousand six hundred and fifty. NIV 25 The number from the tribe of Gad was 45,650. ASV 26 Of the children of Judah, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 26 From the descendants of Judah: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 27 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Judah, were threescore and fourteen thousand and six hundred. NIV 27 The number from the tribe of Judah was 74,600. ASV 28 Of the children of Issachar, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 28 From the descendants of Issachar: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 29 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Issachar, were fifty and four thousand and four hundred. NIV 29 The number from the tribe of Issachar was 54,400. ASV 30 Of the children of Zebulun, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 30 From the descendants of Zebulun: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 31 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Zebulun, were fifty and seven thousand and four hundred. NIV 31 The number from the tribe of Zebulun was 57,400. ASV 32 Of the children of Joseph, [namely], of the children of Ephraim, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 32 From the sons of Joseph: From the descendants of Ephraim: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 33 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Ephraim, were forty thousand and five hundred. NIV 33 The number from the tribe of Ephraim was 40,500. ASV 34 Of the children of Manasseh, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 34 From the descendants of Manasseh: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 35 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Manasseh, were thirty and two thousand and two hundred. NIV 35 The number from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200. ASV 36 Of the children of Benjamin, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 36 From the descendants of Benjamin: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 37 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Benjamin, were thirty and five thousand and four hundred. NIV 37 The number from the tribe of Benjamin was 35,400. ASV 38 Of the children of Dan, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 38 From the descendants of Dan: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 39 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Dan, were threescore and two thousand and seven hundred. NIV 39 The number from the tribe of Dan was 62,700. ASV 40 Of the children of Asher, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 40 From the descendants of Asher: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 41 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Asher, were forty and one thousand and five hundred. NIV 41 The number from the tribe of Asher was 41,500. ASV 42 Of the children of Naphtali, their generations, by their families, by their fathers' houses, according to the number of the names, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war; NIV 42 From the descendants of Naphtali: All the men twenty years old or more who were able to serve in the army were listed by name, according to the records of their clans and families. ASV 43 those that were numbered of them, of the tribe of Naphtali, were fifty and three thousand and four hundred. NIV 43 The number from the tribe of Naphtali was 53,400. ASV 44 These are they that were numbered, whom Moses and Aaron numbered, and the princes of Israel, being twelve men: they were each one for his fathers' house. NIV 44 These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each one representing his family. ASV 45 So all they that were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers' houses, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war in Israel; NIV 45 All the Israelites twenty years old or more who were able to serve in Israel's army were counted according to their families. ASV 46 even all they that were numbered were six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty. NIV 46 The total number was 603,550. ASV 47 But the Levites after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them. NIV 47 The families of the tribe of Levi, however, were not counted along with the others. ASV 48 For Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, NIV 48 The LORD had said to Moses: ASV 49 Only the tribe of Levi thou shalt not number, neither shalt thou take the sum of them among the children of Israel; NIV 49 "You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census of the other Israelites. ASV 50 but appoint thou the Levites over the tabernacle of the testimony, and over all the furniture thereof, and over all that belongeth to it: they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the furniture thereof; and they shall minister unto it, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle. NIV 50 Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the tabernacle of the Testimony--over all its furnishings and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the tabernacle and all its furnishings; they are to take care of it and encamp around it. ASV 51 And when the tabernacle setteth forward, the Levites shall take it down; and when the tabernacle is to be pitched, the Levites shall set it up: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. NIV 51 Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who goes near it shall be put to death. ASV 52 And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, according to their hosts. NIV 52 The Israelites are to set up their tents by divisions, each man in his own camp under his own standard. ASV 53 But the Levites shall encamp round about the tabernacle of the testimony, that there be no wrath upon the congregation of the children of Israel: and the Levites shall keep the charge of the tabernacle of the testimony. NIV 53 The Levites, however, are to set up their tents around the tabernacle of the Testimony so that wrath will not fall on the Israelite community. The Levites are to be responsible for the care of the tabernacle of the Testimony." ASV 54 Thus did the children of Israel; according to all that Jehovah commanded Moses, so did they. NIV 54 The Israelites did all this just as the LORD commanded Moses.
