NIV 16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.) NAS 17 When Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, he said to them, "Go up there into the Negev; then go up into the hill country. NIV 17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan, he said, "Go up through the Negev and on into the hill country. NAS 18 "See what the land is like, and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many. NIV 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. NAS 19 "How is the land in which they live, is it good or bad? And how are the cities in which they live, are they like open camps or with fortifications? NIV 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? NAS 20 "How is the land, is it fat or lean? Are there trees in it or not? Make an effort then to get some of the fruit of the land." Now the time was the time of the first ripe grapes. NIV 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees on it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land." (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.) NAS 21 So they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, at Lebo-hamath. NIV 21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin as far as Rehob, toward Lebo Hamath. NAS 22 When they had gone up into the Negev, they came to Hebron where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) NIV 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) NIV 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs. NAS 24 That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut down from there. NIV 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. NAS 25 When they returned from spying out the land, at the end of forty days, NIV 25 At the end of forty days they returned from exploring the land. NAS 26 they proceeded to come to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel in the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; and they brought back word to them and to all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land. NIV 26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. NAS 27 Thus they told him, and said, "We went in to the land where you sent us; and it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. NIV 27 They gave Moses this account: "We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. NAS 28 "Nevertheless , the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw the descendants of Anak there. NIV 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. NAS 29 "Amalek is living in the land of the Negev and the Hittites and the Jebusites and the Amorites are living in the hill country, and the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan." NIV 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan." NAS 30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, "We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will surely overcome it." NIV 30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it." NAS 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us." NIV 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are." NAS 32 So they gave out to the sons of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone, in spying it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size. NIV 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. NAS 33 "There also we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim ); and we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight." NIV 33 We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."
