NCV 1 The Lord said to Moses, NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, NCV 2 "Send men to explore the land of Canaan, which I will give to the Israelites. Send one leader from each tribe." NIV 2 "Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders." NCV 3 So Moses obeyed the Lord's command and sent the Israelite leaders out from the Desert of Paran. NIV 3 So at the LORD's command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites. Are there a few or many? NIV 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. NCV 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? Are they unwalled or fortified? NCV 20 What about the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees there? Try to bring back some of the fruit from that land." NCV 22 They went through the southern area to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak lived. (The city of Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) NIV 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) NCV 23 In the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch of a grapevine that had one bunch of grapes on it and carried that branch on a pole between two of them. They also got some pomegranates and figs. NIV 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs. NCV 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because the Israelites cut off the bunch of grapes there. NIV 25 At the end of forty days they returned from exploring the land. NCV 26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and all the Israelites at Kadesh, in the Desert of Paran. The men reported to them and showed everybody the fruit from the land. NIV 26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. NCV 27 They told Moses, "We went to the land where you sent us, and it is a fertile land! Here is some of its fruit. NIV 27 They gave Moses this account: "We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. NCV 28 But the people who live there are strong. Their cities are walled and very large. We even saw some Anakites there. NIV 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. NCV 29 The Amalekites live in the southern area; the Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the mountains; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan River." NIV 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan." NCV 30 Then Caleb told the people near Moses to be quiet, and he said, "We should certainly go up and take the land for ourselves. We can certainly do it." NIV 30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it." NCV 31 But the men who had gone with him said, "We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are." NIV 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are." NCV 32 And those men gave the Israelites a bad report about the land they explored, saying, "The land that we explored is too large to conquer. All the people we saw are very tall. NIV 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. NCV 33 We saw the Nephilim people there. (The Anakites come from the Nephilim people.) We felt like grasshoppers, and we looked like grasshoppers to them." NIV 33 We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."
