NKJV 1 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, NKJV 2 "Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them." NIV 2 "Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders." NKJV 3 So Moses sent them from the Wilderness of Paran according to the command of the Lord, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel. NIV 3 So at the LORD's command Moses sent them out from the Desert of Paran. All of them were leaders of the Israelites. NKJV 4 Now these were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur; NIV 4 These are their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur; NKJV 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori; NIV 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori; NKJV 6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh; NIV 6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; NKJV 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph; NIV 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph; NKJV 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun; NIV 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun; NKJV 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu; NIV 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu; NKJV 10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi; NIV 10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi; NKJV 11 from the tribe of Joseph, that is, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi; NIV 11 from the tribe of Manasseh (a tribe of Joseph), Gaddi son of Susi; NKJV 12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli; NIV 12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli; NKJV 13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael; NIV 13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael; NKJV 14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi; NIV 14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi; NKJV 15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. NIV 15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Maki. NKJV 16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua. NIV 16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to explore the land. (Moses gave Hoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.) NKJV 17 Then Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said to them, "Go up this way into the South, and go up to the mountains, NIV 17 When Moses sent them to explore Canaan, he said, "Go up through the Negev and on into the hill country. NKJV 18 and see what the land is like: whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many; NIV 18 See what the land is like and whether the people who live there are strong or weak, few or many. NKJV 19 whether the land they dwell in is good or bad; whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or strongholds; NIV 19 What kind of land do they live in? Is it good or bad? What kind of towns do they live in? Are they unwalled or fortified? NKJV 20 whether the land is rich or poor; and whether there are forests there or not. Be of good courage. And bring some of the fruit of the land." Now the time was the season of the first ripe grapes. NIV 20 How is the soil? Is it fertile or poor? Are there trees on it or not? Do your best to bring back some of the fruit of the land." (It was the season for the first ripe grapes.) NKJV 21 So they went up and spied out the land from the Wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, near the entrance of Hamath. NIV 21 So they went up and explored the land from the Desert of Zin as far as Rehob, toward Lebo Hamath. NKJV 22 And they went up through the South and came to Hebron; Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, were there. (Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) NIV 22 They went up through the Negev and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the descendants of Anak, lived. (Hebron had been built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.) NKJV 23 Then they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and there cut down a branch with one cluster of grapes; they carried it between two of them on a pole. They also brought some of the pomegranates and figs. NIV 23 When they reached the Valley of Eshcol, they cut off a branch bearing a single cluster of grapes. Two of them carried it on a pole between them, along with some pomegranates and figs. NKJV 24 The place was called the Valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the men of Israel cut down there. NIV 24 That place was called the Valley of Eshcol because of the cluster of grapes the Israelites cut off there. NKJV 25 And they returned from spying out the land after forty days. NIV 25 At the end of forty days they returned from exploring the land. NKJV 26 Now they departed and came back to Moses and Aaron and all the congregation of the children of Israel in the Wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh; they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land. NIV 26 They came back to Moses and Aaron and the whole Israelite community at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. There they reported to them and to the whole assembly and showed them the fruit of the land. NKJV 27 Then they told him, and said: "We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. NIV 27 They gave Moses this account: "We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit. NKJV 28 Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. NIV 28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. NKJV 29 The Amalekites dwell in the land of the South; the Hittites, the Jebusites, and the Amorites dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Jordan." NIV 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan." NKJV 30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, "Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it." NIV 30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, "We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it." NKJV 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we." NIV 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We can't attack those people; they are stronger than we are." NKJV 32 And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, "The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. NIV 32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size. NKJV 33 There we saw the giants (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight." NIV 33 We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them."
