Numbers 16

LEB 1 Now Korah son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth, the descendants of Reuben, NIV 1 Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites--Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth--became insolent LEB 2 took two hundred and fifty men from the {Israelites}, leaders of the community summoned from the assembly, {renowned men}, and {they confronted} Moses. NIV 2 and rose up against Moses. With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council. LEB 3 They were assembled in front of Moses and Aaron, and they said to them, "{You take too much upon yourselves}! All of the community is holy, every one of them, and Yahweh [is] in their midst, so why do you raise yourselves over the assembly of Yahweh?" NIV 3 They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD's assembly?" LEB 4 When Moses heard [this], he fell on his face. NIV 4 When Moses heard this, he fell facedown. LEB 5 And he said to Korah and to his entire company, saying, "[Tomorrow] morning Yahweh will make known who [is] his and [who] is holy, and he will bring him near to him, whomever he chooses he will bring near to him. NIV 5 Then he said to Korah and all his followers: "In the morning the LORD will show who belongs to him and who is holy, and he will have that person come near him. The man he chooses he will cause to come near him. LEB 6 Do this: take for yourselves censers, Korah and all of your company; NIV 6 You, Korah, and all your followers are to do this: Take censers LEB 7 tomorrow put fire in them and place incense on them {before} Yahweh; the man whom Yahweh chooses [will be] the holy [one]. You take too much upon yourselves, sons of Levi!" NIV 7 and tomorrow put fire and incense in them before the LORD. The man the LORD chooses will be the one who is holy. You Levites have gone too far!" LEB 8 And Moses said to Korah, "Please listen, sons of Levi! NIV 8 Moses also said to Korah, "Now listen, you Levites! LEB 9 [Is it] too little for you that the God of Israel set you apart from the community of Israel {to allow you to approach him} to do the work of the tabernacle of Yahweh, to stand {before} the community to serve them? NIV 9 Isn't it enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the LORD's tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them? LEB 10 {He has allowed you to approach him}, you with all your brothers, the descendants of Levi, but yet you also seek the priesthood. NIV 10 He has brought you and all your fellow Levites near himself, but now you are trying to get the priesthood too. LEB 11 Therefore you and your company that has banded together against Yahweh. What is Aaron that you grumble against him?" NIV 11 It is against the LORD that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?" LEB 12 Moses sent to call [for] Dathan and Abiram son of Eliab, but they said, "We will not come! NIV 12 Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. But they said, "We will not come! LEB 13 Is it too little that you have brought us from a land that flows with milk and honey to kill us in the desert, and that you also appoint yourself as a ruler over us? NIV 13 Isn't it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the desert? And now you also want to lord it over us? LEB 14 Surely, you have not brought us to a land that flows with milk and honey, and you have not given us the inheritance of fields and a vineyard. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? We will not come!" NIV 14 Moreover, you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? No, we will not come!" LEB 15 Then Moses became angry, and he said to Yahweh, "Do not notice their grain offering. I have not offered one donkey from them, and I have not mistreated one of them." NIV 15 Then Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, "Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them." LEB 16 And Moses said to Korah, "You and your entire company will be {before} Yahweh tomorrow, you and they and Aaron. NIV 16 Moses said to Korah, "You and all your followers are to appear before the LORD tomorrow--you and they and Aaron. LEB 17 Each one take his censer, and put incense on it and you will present it {before} Yahweh, and each of you bring his censer, two hundred and fifty censers, you and Aaron, each his censer." NIV 17 Each man is to take his censer and put incense in it--250 censers in all--and present it before the LORD. You and Aaron are to present your censers also." LEB 18 So each of them took his censer, and they put fire on them, and they placed incense on them; they stood [at the] doorway of the tent of the assembly of Moses and Aaron. NIV 18 So each man took his censer, put fire and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. LEB 19 And Korah summoned them, the entire community, by the doorway of the tent of assembly, and the glory of Yahweh appeared to all the community. NIV 19 When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition to them at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the entire assembly. LEB 20 And Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, NIV 20 The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, LEB 21 "Separate yourselves from the midst of this community, that I can destroy them in a moment." NIV 21 "Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once." LEB 22 And they fell on their faces, and they said, "God, God of the spirits of all flesh, will one man sin and you become angry toward the entire community?" NIV 22 But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, "O God, God of the spirits of all mankind, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?" LEB 23 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, NIV 23 Then the LORD said to Moses, LEB 24 "Speak to the community, saying, 'Move away from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.'" NIV 24 "Say to the assembly, 'Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.' " LEB 25 So Moses stood up and went to Dathan and Abiram; the elders of Israel followed after him. NIV 25 Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. LEB 26 He said to the community, saying, "Please turn away from the tents of these wicked men, and do not touch anything {that belongs to them}, or you will be destroyed with all their sins." NIV 26 He warned the assembly, "Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins." LEB 27 And so they moved away from around the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram; and Dathan and Abiram came out standing [at] the doorway of their tents, with their wives, sons, and little children. NIV 27 So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents. LEB 28 And Moses said, "In this you will know that Yahweh has sent me to do all these works; [it is] not from my heart. NIV 28 Then Moses said, "This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea: LEB 29 {If they die a natural death} or {if a natural fate is visited upon them}, Yahweh has not sent me. NIV 29 If these men die a natural death and experience only what usually happens to men, then the LORD has not sent me. LEB 30 But if Yahweh creates something new, and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up and {all that belongs to them}, and they go down alive [to] Sheol, and you will know that these men have despised Yahweh." NIV 30 But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt." LEB 31 And it happened, as soon as he finished {speaking} all these words, the ground that [was] under them split open. NIV 31 As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart LEB 32 The land opened its mouth and swallowed them up with their houses and every person {that belonged to Korah} and all the property. NIV 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all Korah's men and all their possessions. LEB 33 They went down alive [to] Sheol, they and all that belonged to them, and the land covered over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly. NIV 33 They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. LEB 34 All Israel who [were] around them fled at their cry, because they said, "Lest the land swallow us up!" NIV 34 At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, "The earth is going to swallow us too!" LEB 35 And fire went out from Yahweh, and it consumed the two hundred and fifty men presenting the incense. NIV 35 And fire came out from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense. LEB 36 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, NIV 36 The LORD said to Moses, LEB 37 "Say to Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, '{Take out} the censers from among the place of burning because they are sacred, and scatter the fire outside. NIV 37 "Tell Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, to take the censers out of the smoldering remains and scatter the coals some distance away, for the censers are holy-- LEB 38 The censers of these {who have sinned} at the cost of their lives, let them be made into gilded leafing plating for the altar; because they presented them {before Yahweh}, they are holy; and they will be a sign for the {Israelites}.'" NIV 38 the censers of the men who sinned at the cost of their lives. Hammer the censers into sheets to overlay the altar, for they were presented before the LORD and have become holy. Let them be a sign to the Israelites." LEB 39 Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers that the ones who were burned presented, and they hammered them out thinly [as] plating for the altar; NIV 39 So Eleazar the priest collected the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned up, and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar, LEB 40 [it was] a memorial for the {Israelites}, so that {no strange man} who is not from {the offspring} of Aaron should approach the presence [of] Yahweh to burn a smoke offering; he will not be like Korah and his company, just as Yahweh had spoken to him by the hand of Moses. NIV 40 as the LORD directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense before the LORD, or he would become like Korah and his followers. LEB 41 The next day all the community of the {Israelites} grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying, "You have killed the people of Yahweh!" NIV 41 The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. "You have killed the LORD's people," they said. LEB 42 Then, when the community had gathered against Moses and Aaron, they turned to the tent of assembly, and behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Yahweh appeared. NIV 42 But when the assembly gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron and turned toward the Tent of Meeting, suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared. LEB 43 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of assembly, NIV 43 Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the Tent of Meeting, LEB 44 and Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, NIV 44 and the LORD said to Moses, LEB 45 "Get away from the midst of this community, and I will finish them in an instant," but they fell on their faces. NIV 45 "Get away from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once." And they fell facedown. LEB 46 And Moses and Aaron said, "Take the censer, and put fire on it from the altar. Place incense [on it], and bring it quickly to the community, and make atonement for them, because wrath went out from the presence of Yahweh, and a plague has begun." NIV 46 Then Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer and put incense in it, along with fire from the altar, and hurry to the assembly to make atonement for them. Wrath has come out from the LORD; the plague has started." LEB 47 And so Aaron took [it] just as Moses had spoken, and he ran into the midst of the assembly, for behold, the plague had begun among the people; so he gave the incense and made atonement for the people. NIV 47 So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people, but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. LEB 48 He stood between the dead and between the living, and the plague was stopped. NIV 48 He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped. LEB 49 Those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died on account of Korah. NIV 49 But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah. LEB 50 Then Aaron returned to Moses at the doorway of the tent of assembly, and the plague was stopped. NIV 50 Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, for the plague had stopped.
