Numbers 21:4-9

CEB 4 They marched from Mount Hor on the Reed Sea road around the land of Edom. The people became impatient on the road. NRS 4 From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. CEB 5 The people spoke against God and Moses: "Why did you bring us up from Egypt to kill us in the desert, where there is no food or water. And we detest this miserable bread!" NRS 5 The people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food." CEB 6 So the LORD sent poisonous snakes among the people and they bit the people. Many of the Israelites died. NRS 6 Then the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. CEB 7 The people went to Moses and said, "We've sinned, for we spoke against the LORD and you. Pray to the LORD so that he will send the snakes away from us." So Moses prayed for the people. NRS 7 The people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned by speaking against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord to take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people. CEB 8 The LORD said to Moses, "Make a poisonous snake and place it on a pole. Whoever is bitten can look at it and live." NRS 8 And the Lord said to Moses, "Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live." CEB 9 Moses made a bronze snake and placed it on a pole. If a snake bit someone, that person could look at the bronze snake and live. NRS 9 So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.
