Numbers 27

NRS 1 Then the daughters of Zelophehad came forward. Zelophehad was son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh son of Joseph, a member of the Manassite clans. The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. NIV 1 The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. They approached NRS 2 They stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and all the congregation, at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and they said, NIV 2 the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly, and said, NRS 3 "Our father died in the wilderness; he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the Lord in the company of Korah, but died for his own sin; and he had no sons. NIV 3 "Our father died in the desert. He was not among Korah's followers, who banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. NRS 4 Why should the name of our father be taken away from his clan because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father's brothers." NIV 4 Why should our father's name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father's relatives." NRS 5 Moses brought their case before the Lord. NIV 5 So Moses brought their case before the LORD NRS 6 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: NIV 6 and the LORD said to him, NRS 7 The daughters of Zelophehad are right in what they are saying; you shall indeed let them possess an inheritance among their father's brothers and pass the inheritance of their father on to them. NIV 7 "What Zelophehad's daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father's relatives and turn their father's inheritance over to them. NRS 8 You shall also say to the Israelites, "If a man dies, and has no son, then you shall pass his inheritance on to his daughter. NIV 8 "Say to the Israelites, 'If a man dies and leaves no son, turn his inheritance over to his daughter. NRS 9 If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. NIV 9 If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. NRS 10 If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. NIV 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers. NRS 11 And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to the nearest kinsman of his clan, and he shall possess it. It shall be for the Israelites a statute and ordinance, as the Lord commanded Moses." NIV 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to be a legal requirement for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.' " NRS 12 The Lord said to Moses, "Go up this mountain of the Abarim range, and see the land that I have given to the Israelites. NIV 12 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain in the Abarim range and see the land I have given the Israelites. NRS 13 When you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, NIV 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, NRS 14 because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin when the congregation quarreled with me. You did not show my holiness before their eyes at the waters." (These are the waters of Meribath-kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) NIV 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes." (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.) NRS 15 Moses spoke to the Lord, saying, NIV 15 Moses said to the LORD, NRS 16 "Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint someone over the congregation NIV 16 "May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all mankind, appoint a man over this community NRS 17 who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the Lord may not be like sheep without a shepherd." NIV 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the LORD's people will not be like sheep without a shepherd." NRS 18 So the Lord said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand upon him; NIV 18 So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand on him. NRS 19 have him stand before Eleazar the priest and all the congregation, and commission him in their sight. NIV 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. NRS 20 You shall give him some of your authority, so that all the congregation of the Israelites may obey. NIV 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. NRS 21 But he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the decision of the Urim before the Lord; at his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the Israelites with him, the whole congregation." NIV 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the LORD. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in." NRS 22 So Moses did as the Lord commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation; NIV 22 Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. NRS 23 he laid his hands on him and commissioned him—as the Lord had directed through Moses. NIV 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD instructed through Moses.
