Numbers 27

RSV 1 Then drew near the daughters of Zeloph'ehad the son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manas'seh, from the families of Manas'seh the son of Joseph. The names of his daughters were: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. NIV 1 The daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. The names of the daughters were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. They approached RSV 2 And they stood before Moses, and before Elea'zar the priest, and before the leaders and all the congregation, at the door of the tent of meeting, saying, NIV 2 the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders and the whole assembly, and said, RSV 3 "Our father died in the wilderness; he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah, but died for his own sin; and he had no sons. NIV 3 "Our father died in the desert. He was not among Korah's followers, who banded together against the LORD, but he died for his own sin and left no sons. RSV 4 Why should the name of our father be taken away from his family, because he had no son? Give to us a possession among our father's brethren." NIV 4 Why should our father's name disappear from his clan because he had no son? Give us property among our father's relatives." RSV 5 Moses brought their case before the LORD. NIV 5 So Moses brought their case before the LORD RSV 6 And the LORD said to Moses, NIV 6 and the LORD said to him, RSV 7 "The daughters of Zeloph'ehad are right; you shall give them possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren and cause the inheritance of their father to pass to them. NIV 7 "What Zelophehad's daughters are saying is right. You must certainly give them property as an inheritance among their father's relatives and turn their father's inheritance over to them. RSV 8 And you shall say to the people of Israel, 'If a man dies, and has no son, then you shall cause his inheritance to pass to his daughter. NIV 8 "Say to the Israelites, 'If a man dies and leaves no son, turn his inheritance over to his daughter. RSV 9 And if he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers. NIV 9 If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. RSV 10 And if he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father's brothers. NIV 10 If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father's brothers. RSV 11 And if his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his kinsman that is next to him of his family, and he shall possess it. And it shall be to the people of Israel a statute and ordinance, as the LORD commanded Moses.'" NIV 11 If his father had no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan, that he may possess it. This is to be a legal requirement for the Israelites, as the LORD commanded Moses.' " RSV 12 The LORD said to Moses, "Go up into this mountain of Ab'arim, and see the land which I have given to the people of Israel. NIV 12 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Go up this mountain in the Abarim range and see the land I have given the Israelites. RSV 13 And when you have seen it, you also shall be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was gathered, NIV 13 After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was, RSV 14 because you rebelled against my word in the wilderness of Zin during the strife of the congregation, to sanctify me at the waters before their eyes." (These are the waters of Mer'ibah of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) NIV 14 for when the community rebelled at the waters in the Desert of Zin, both of you disobeyed my command to honor me as holy before their eyes." (These were the waters of Meribah Kadesh, in the Desert of Zin.) RSV 15 Moses said to the LORD, NIV 15 Moses said to the LORD, RSV 16 "Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation, NIV 16 "May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all mankind, appoint a man over this community RSV 17 who shall go out before them and come in before them, who shall lead them out and bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD may not be as sheep which have no shepherd." NIV 17 to go out and come in before them, one who will lead them out and bring them in, so the LORD's people will not be like sheep without a shepherd." RSV 18 And the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand upon him; NIV 18 So the LORD said to Moses, "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay your hand on him. RSV 19 cause him to stand before Elea'zar the priest and all the congregation, and you shall commission him in their sight. NIV 19 Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire assembly and commission him in their presence. RSV 20 You shall invest him with some of your authority, that all the congregation of the people of Israel may obey. NIV 20 Give him some of your authority so the whole Israelite community will obey him. RSV 21 And he shall stand before Elea'zar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the LORD; at his word they shall go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he and all the people of Israel with him, the whole congregation." NIV 21 He is to stand before Eleazar the priest, who will obtain decisions for him by inquiring of the Urim before the LORD. At his command he and the entire community of the Israelites will go out, and at his command they will come in." RSV 22 And Moses did as the LORD commanded him; he took Joshua and caused him to stand before Elea'zar the priest and the whole congregation, NIV 22 Moses did as the LORD commanded him. He took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole assembly. RSV 23 and he laid his hands upon him, and commissioned him as the LORD directed through Moses. NIV 23 Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD instructed through Moses.
