Numbers 3

NRS 1 This is the lineage of Aaron and Moses at the time when the Lord spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai. NIV 1 This is the account of the family of Aaron and Moses at the time the LORD talked with Moses on Mount Sinai. NRS 2 These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar; NIV 2 The names of the sons of Aaron were Nadab the firstborn and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. NRS 3 these are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to minister as priests. NIV 3 Those were the names of Aaron's sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests. NRS 4 Nadab and Abihu died before the Lord when they offered unholy fire before the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the lifetime of their father Aaron. NIV 4 Nadab and Abihu, however, fell dead before the LORD when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Desert of Sinai. They had no sons; so only Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron. NRS 5 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: NIV 5 The LORD said to Moses, NRS 6 Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, so that they may assist him. NIV 6 "Bring the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him. NRS 7 They shall perform duties for him and for the whole congregation in front of the tent of meeting, doing service at the tabernacle; NIV 7 They are to perform duties for him and for the whole community at the Tent of Meeting by doing the work of the tabernacle. NRS 8 they shall be in charge of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, and attend to the duties for the Israelites as they do service at the tabernacle. NIV 8 They are to take care of all the furnishings of the Tent of Meeting, fulfilling the obligations of the Israelites by doing the work of the tabernacle. NRS 9 You shall give the Levites to Aaron and his descendants; they are unreservedly given to him from among the Israelites. NIV 9 Give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to him. NRS 10 But you shall make a register of Aaron and his descendants; it is they who shall attend to the priesthood, and any outsider who comes near shall be put to death. NIV 10 Appoint Aaron and his sons to serve as priests; anyone else who approaches the sanctuary must be put to death." NRS 11 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: NIV 11 The LORD also said to Moses, NRS 12 I hereby accept the Levites from among the Israelites as substitutes for all the firstborn that open the womb among the Israelites. The Levites shall be mine, NIV 12 "I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine, NRS 13 for all the firstborn are mine; when I killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated for my own all the firstborn in Israel, both human and animal; they shall be mine. I am the Lord. NIV 13 for all the firstborn are mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, whether man or animal. They are to be mine. I am the LORD." NRS 14 Then the Lord spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying: NIV 14 The LORD said to Moses in the Desert of Sinai, NRS 15 Enroll the Levites by ancestral houses and by clans. You shall enroll every male from a month old and upward. NIV 15 "Count the Levites by their families and clans. Count every male a month old or more." NRS 16 So Moses enrolled them according to the word of the Lord, as he was commanded. NIV 16 So Moses counted them, as he was commanded by the word of the LORD. NRS 17 The following were the sons of Levi, by their names: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. NIV 17 These were the names of the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. NRS 18 These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their clans: Libni and Shimei. NIV 18 These were the names of the Gershonite clans: Libni and Shimei. NRS 19 The sons of Kohath by their clans: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel. NIV 19 The Kohathite clans: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. NRS 20 The sons of Merari by their clans: Mahli and Mushi. These are the clans of the Levites, by their ancestral houses. NIV 20 The Merarite clans: Mahli and Mushi. These were the Levite clans, according to their families. NRS 21 To Gershon belonged the clan of the Libnites and the clan of the Shimeites; these were the clans of the Gershonites. NRS 22 Their enrollment, counting all the males from a month old and upward, was seven thousand five hundred. NIV 22 The number of all the males a month old or more who were counted was 7,500. NRS 23 The clans of the Gershonites were to camp behind the tabernacle on the west, NIV 23 The Gershonite clans were to camp on the west, behind the tabernacle. NRS 24 with Eliasaph son of Lael as head of the ancestral house of the Gershonites. NIV 24 The leader of the families of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael. NRS 25 The responsibility of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting was to be the tabernacle, the tent with its covering, the screen for the entrance of the tent of meeting, NIV 25 At the Tent of Meeting the Gershonites were responsible for the care of the tabernacle and tent, its coverings, the curtain at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, NRS 26 the hangings of the court, the screen for the entrance of the court that is around the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords—all the service pertaining to these. NIV 26 the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar, and the ropes--and everything related to their use. NRS 27 To Kohath belonged the clan of the Amramites, the clan of the Izharites, the clan of the Hebronites, and the clan of the Uzzielites; these are the clans of the Kohathites. NIV 27 To Kohath belonged the clans of the Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites and Uzzielites; these were the Kohathite clans. NRS 28 Counting all the males, from a month old and upward, there were eight thousand six hundred, attending to the duties of the sanctuary. NIV 28 The number of all the males a month old or more was "8,600. The Kohathites were responsible for the care of the sanctuary. NRS 29 The clans of the Kohathites were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle, NIV 29 The Kohathite clans were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle. NRS 30 with Elizaphan son of Uzziel as head of the ancestral house of the clans of the Kohathites. NIV 30 The leader of the families of the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan son of Uzziel. NRS 31 Their responsibility was to be the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the vessels of the sanctuary with which the priests minister, and the screen—all the service pertaining to these. NIV 31 They were responsible for the care of the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the articles of the sanctuary used in ministering, the curtain, and everything related to their use. NRS 32 Eleazar son of Aaron the priest was to be chief over the leaders of the Levites, and to have oversight of those who had charge of the sanctuary. NIV 32 The chief leader of the Levites was Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible for the care of the sanctuary. NRS 33 To Merari belonged the clan of the Mahlites and the clan of the Mushites: these are the clans of Merari. NIV 33 To Merari belonged the clans of the Mahlites and the Mushites; these were the Merarite clans. NRS 34 Their enrollment, counting all the males from a month old and upward, was six thousand two hundred. NIV 34 The number of all the males a month old or more who were counted was 6,200. NRS 35 The head of the ancestral house of the clans of Merari was Zuriel son of Abihail; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle. NIV 35 The leader of the families of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle. NRS 36 The responsibility assigned to the sons of Merari was to be the frames of the tabernacle, the bars, the pillars, the bases, and all their accessories—all the service pertaining to these; NIV 36 The Merarites were appointed to take care of the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts, bases, all its equipment, and everything related to their use, NRS 37 also the pillars of the court all around, with their bases and pegs and cords. NIV 37 as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs and ropes. NRS 38 Those who were to camp in front of the tabernacle on the east—in front of the tent of meeting toward the east—were Moses and Aaron and Aaron's sons, having charge of the rites within the sanctuary, whatever had to be done for the Israelites; and any outsider who came near was to be put to death. NIV 38 Moses and Aaron and his sons were to camp to the east of the tabernacle, toward the sunrise, in front of the Tent of Meeting. They were responsible for the care of the sanctuary on behalf of the Israelites. Anyone else who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death. NRS 39 The total enrollment of the Levites whom Moses and Aaron enrolled at the commandment of the Lord, by their clans, all the males from a month old and upward, was twenty-two thousand. NIV 39 The total number of Levites counted at the LORD's command by Moses and Aaron according to their clans, including every male a month old or more, was 22,000. NRS 40 Then the Lord said to Moses: Enroll all the firstborn males of the Israelites, from a month old and upward, and count their names. NIV 40 The LORD said to Moses, "Count all the firstborn Israelite males who are a month old or more and make a list of their names. NRS 41 But you shall accept the Levites for me—I am the Lord—as substitutes for all the firstborn among the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites as substitutes for all the firstborn among the livestock of the Israelites. NIV 41 Take the Levites for me in place of all the firstborn of the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of the Israelites. I am the LORD." NRS 42 So Moses enrolled all the firstborn among the Israelites, as the Lord commanded him. NIV 42 So Moses counted all the firstborn of the Israelites, as the LORD commanded him. NRS 43 The total enrollment, all the firstborn males from a month old and upward, counting the number of names, was twenty-two thousand two hundred seventy-three. NIV 43 The total number of firstborn males a month old or more, listed by name, was 22,273. NRS 44 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: NIV 44 The LORD also said to Moses, NRS 45 Accept the Levites as substitutes for all the firstborn among the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites as substitutes for their livestock; and the Levites shall be mine. I am the Lord. NIV 45 "Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites are to be mine. I am the LORD. NRS 46 As the price of redemption of the two hundred seventy-three of the firstborn of the Israelites, over and above the number of the Levites, NIV 46 To redeem the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites, NRS 47 you shall accept five shekels apiece, reckoning by the shekel of the sanctuary, a shekel of twenty gerahs. NIV 47 collect five shekels for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs. NRS 48 Give to Aaron and his sons the money by which the excess number of them is redeemed. NIV 48 Give the money for the redemption of the additional Israelites to Aaron and his sons." NRS 49 So Moses took the redemption money from those who were over and above those redeemed by the Levites; NIV 49 So Moses collected the redemption money from those who exceeded the number redeemed by the Levites. NRS 50 from the firstborn of the Israelites he took the money, one thousand three hundred sixty-five shekels, reckoned by the shekel of the sanctuary; NIV 50 From the firstborn of the Israelites he collected silver weighing "1,365 shekels, according to the sanctuary shekel. NRS 51 and Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, according to the word of the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moses. NIV 51 Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, as he was commanded by the word of the LORD.
