Numbers 31

BBE 1 Then the Lord said to Moses, NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, BBE 2 Give the Midianites punishment for the wrong they did to the children of Israel: and after that you will go to rest with your people. NIV 2 "Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people." BBE 3 So Moses said to the people, Let men from among you be armed for war to put into effect against Midian the Lord's punishment on them. NIV 3 So Moses said to the people, "Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites and to carry out the LORD's vengeance on them. BBE 4 From every tribe of Israel send a thousand to the war. NIV 4 Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel." BBE 5 So from the thousands of Israel a thousand were taken from every tribe, twelve thousand men armed for war. NIV 5 So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel. BBE 6 And Moses sent them out to war, a thousand from every tribe, and with them Phinehas, the son of Eleazar the priest, taking in his hands the vessels of the holy place and the horns for sounding the note of war. NIV 6 Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling. BBE 7 And they made war on Midian, as the Lord gave orders to Moses; and they put to death every male. NIV 7 They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man. BBE 8 They put the kings of Midian to death with the rest, Evi and Reken and Zur and Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian: and Balaam, the son of Beor, they put to death with the sword. NIV 8 Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba--the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. BBE 9 The women of Midian with their little ones the children of Israel took prisoner; and all their cattle and flocks and all their goods they took for themselves; NIV 9 The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder. BBE 10 And after burning all their towns and all their tent-circles, NIV 10 They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps. BBE 11 They went away with the goods they had taken, man and beast. NIV 11 They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals, BBE 12 And the prisoners and the goods and everything they had taken, they took to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the people of Israel, to the tent-circle in the lowlands of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. NIV 12 and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho. BBE 13 Then Moses and Eleazar the priest and the chiefs of the people went out to them before they had come into the tent-circle. NIV 13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. BBE 14 And Moses was angry with the chiefs of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds who had come back from the war. NIV 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--who returned from the battle. BBE 15 And Moses said to them, Why have you kept all the women safe? NIV 15 "Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them. BBE 16 It was these who, moved by Balaam, were the cause of Israel's sin against the Lord in the question of Peor, because of which disease came on the people of the Lord. NIV 16 "They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people. BBE 17 So now put every male child to death, and every woman who has had sex relations with a man. NIV 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, BBE 18 But all the female children who have had no sex relations with men, you may keep for yourselves. NIV 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. BBE 19 You yourselves will have to keep outside the tent-circle for seven days, anyone of you who has put any person to death or come near a dead body; and on the third day and on the seventh day make yourselves and your prisoners clean. NIV 19 "All of you who have killed anyone or touched anyone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives. BBE 20 And every bit of clothing, and anything made of leather or goats' hair or wood, you are to make clean. NIV 20 Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood." BBE 21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had been to the fight, This is the rule of the law which the Lord has given to Moses: NIV 21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, "This is the requirement of the law that the LORD gave Moses: BBE 22 But gold and silver and brass and iron and tin and lead, NIV 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead BBE 23 And anything which may be heated, is to go through the fire and be made clean; but in addition it is to be put in the water of cleaning: and anything which may not go through the fire is to be put in the water. NIV 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. BBE 24 And on the seventh day, after washing your clothing, you will be clean, and then you may come into the tent-circle. NIV 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp." BBE 25 And the Lord said to Moses, NIV 25 The LORD said to Moses, BBE 26 Get an account of everything which was taken in the war, of man and of beast, you and Eleazar the priest and the heads of families of the people: NIV 26 "You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured. BBE 27 And let division be made of it into two parts, one for the men of war who went out to the fight, and one for all the people: NIV 27 Divide the spoils between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community. BBE 28 And from the men of war who went out let there be offered to the Lord one out of every five hundred, from the persons, and from the oxen and asses and sheep: NIV 28 From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the LORD one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep or goats. BBE 29 Take this from their part and give it to Eleazar the priest as an offering to be lifted up to the Lord. NIV 29 Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part. BBE 30 And from the part given to the children of Israel, take one out of every fifty, from the persons, and from the oxen and asses and sheep, and give it to the Levites who have the care of the House of the Lord. NIV 30 From the Israelites' half, select one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle." BBE 31 So Eleazar and Moses did as the Lord had given orders to Moses. NIV 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses. BBE 32 Now the beasts taken, in addition to what the fighting-men took for themselves, were six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep, NIV 32 The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep, BBE 33 And seventy-two thousand oxen, NIV 33 72,000 cattle, BBE 34 And sixty-one thousand asses; NIV 34 61,000 donkeys BBE 35 And thirty-two thousand persons, that is, women who had never had sex relations with a man. NIV 35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man. BBE 36 And the half given as their part to the men who went to the war, was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand, five hundred sheep, NIV 36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was: BBE 37 Of which the Lord's part was six hundred and seventy-five. NIV 37 of which the tribute for the LORD was 675; BBE 38 The number of oxen was thirty-six thousand, of which the Lord's part was seventy-two; NIV 38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the LORD was 72; BBE 39 The number of asses was thirty thousand, five hundred, of which the Lord's part was sixty-one. NIV 39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the LORD was 61; BBE 40 And the number of persons was sixteen thousand, of which the Lord's part was thirty-two persons. NIV 40 16,000 people, of which the tribute for the LORD was 32. BBE 41 And Moses gave the Lord's part, lifted up as an offering, to Eleazar the priest, as the Lord had given orders to Moses. NIV 41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part, as the LORD commanded Moses. BBE 42 And from the half given to the children of Israel, which Moses had kept separate from that given to the fighting-men, NIV 42 The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men-- BBE 43 (Now the people's half was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand, five hundred sheep, NIV 43 the community's half--was 337,500 sheep, BBE 44 And thirty-six thousand oxen, NIV 44 36,000 cattle, BBE 45 And thirty thousand, five hundred asses, NIV 45 30,500 donkeys BBE 46 And sixteen thousand persons;) NIV 46 and 16,000 people. BBE 47 Even from the children of Israel's half, Moses took one out of every fifty, men and beasts, and gave them to the Levites who had the care of the House of the Lord; as the Lord gave orders to Moses. NIV 47 From the Israelites' half, Moses selected one out of every fifty persons and animals, as the LORD commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle. BBE 48 Then the men in authority over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, came to Moses, NIV 48 Then the officers who were over the units of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--went to Moses BBE 49 And said to him, Your servants have taken note of the number of all the fighting-men under our orders, and every one is present; NIV 49 and said to him, "Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing. BBE 50 And we have here an offering for the Lord from what every man took in the war, ornaments of gold, leg-chains and arm-rings, finger-rings, ear-rings, and neck-ornaments, to make our souls free from sin before the Lord. NIV 50 So we have brought as an offering to the LORD the gold articles each of us acquired--armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces--to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD." BBE 51 So Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, even all the worked ornaments. NIV 51 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold--all the crafted articles. BBE 52 And the gold which the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds gave, as an offering to be lifted up before the Lord, came to sixteen thousand, seven hundred and fifty shekels. NIV 52 All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the LORD weighed 16,750 shekels. BBE 53 (For every man of the army had taken goods for himself in the war.) NIV 53 Each soldier had taken plunder for himself. BBE 54 Then Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold given by the captains of thousands and captains of hundreds, and took it into the Tent of meeting, to be a sign in memory of the children of Israel before the Lord. NIV 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
