Numbers 31

HNV 1 The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, NIV 1 The LORD said to Moses, HNV 2 Avenge the children of Yisra'el of the Midyanim: afterward you shall be gathered to your people. NIV 2 "Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people." HNV 3 Moshe spoke to the people, saying, Arm you men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midyan, to execute the LORD's vengeance on Midyan. NIV 3 So Moses said to the people, "Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites and to carry out the LORD's vengeance on them. HNV 4 Of every tribe one thousand, throughout all the tribes of Yisra'el, shall you send to the war. NIV 4 Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel." HNV 5 So there were delivered, out of the thousands of Yisra'el, a thousand of every tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. NIV 5 So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel. HNV 6 Moshe sent them, one thousand of every tribe, to the war, them and Pinechas the son of El`azar the Kohen, to the war, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand. NIV 6 Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling. HNV 7 They warred against Midyan, as the LORD commanded Moshe; and they killed every male. NIV 7 They fought against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and killed every man. HNV 8 They killed the kings of Midyan with the rest of their slain: Evi, and Rekem, and Tzur, and Hur, and Reva, the five kings of Midyan: Bil`am also the son of Be'or they killed with the sword. NIV 8 Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba--the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. HNV 9 The children of Yisra'el took captive the women of Midyan and their little ones; and all their cattle, and all their flocks, and all their goods, they took for a prey. NIV 9 The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder. HNV 10 All their cities in the places in which they lived, and all their encampments, they burnt with fire. NIV 10 They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps. HNV 11 They took all the spoil, and all the prey, both of man and of animal. NIV 11 They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals, HNV 12 They brought the captives, and the prey, and the spoil, to Moshe, and to El`azar the Kohen, and to the congregation of the children of Yisra'el, to the camp at the plains of Mo'av, which are by the Yarden at Yericho. NIV 12 and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho. HNV 13 Moshe, and El`azar the Kohen, and all the princes of the congregation, went forth to meet them outside of the camp. NIV 13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. HNV 14 Moshe was angry with the officers of the host, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, who came from the service of the war. NIV 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--who returned from the battle. HNV 15 Moshe said to them, Have you saved all the women alive? NIV 15 "Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them. HNV 16 Behold, these caused the children of Yisra'el, through the counsel of Bil`am, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Pe`or, and so the plague was among the congregation of the LORD. NIV 16 "They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people. HNV 17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. NIV 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, HNV 18 But all the girls, who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. NIV 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. HNV 19 Encamp you outside of the camp seven days: whoever has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives. NIV 19 "All of you who have killed anyone or touched anyone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives. HNV 20 As to every garment, and all that is made of skin, and all work of goats' [hair], and all things made of wood, you shall purify yourselves. NIV 20 Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood." HNV 21 El`azar the Kohen said to the men of war who went to the battle, This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moshe: NIV 21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, "This is the requirement of the law that the LORD gave Moses: HNV 22 however the gold, and the silver, the brass, the iron, the tin, and the lead, NIV 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead HNV 23 everything that may abide the fire, you shall make to go through the fire, and it shall be clean; nevertheless it shall be purified with the water for impurity: and all that doesn't withstand the fire you shall make to go through the water. NIV 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. HNV 24 You shall wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean; and afterward you shall come into the camp. NIV 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp." HNV 25 The LORD spoke to Moshe, saying, NIV 25 The LORD said to Moses, HNV 26 Take the sum of the prey that was taken, both of man and of animal, you, and El`azar the Kohen, and the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the congregation; NIV 26 "You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured. HNV 27 and divide the prey into two parts: between the men skilled in war, who went out to battle, and all the congregation. NIV 27 Divide the spoils between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community. HNV 28 Levy a tribute to the LORD of the men of war who went out to battle: one soul of five hundred, [both] of the persons, and of the oxen, and of the donkeys, and of the flocks: NIV 28 From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the LORD one out of every five hundred, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep or goats. HNV 29 take it of their half, and give it to El`azar the Kohen, for the LORD's heave-offering. NIV 29 Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part. HNV 30 Of the children of Yisra'el's half, you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the oxen, of the donkeys, and of the flocks, [even] of all the cattle, and give them to the Levites, who keep the charge of the tent of the LORD. NIV 30 From the Israelites' half, select one out of every fifty, whether persons, cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle." HNV 31 Moshe and El`azar the Kohen did as the LORD commanded Moshe. NIV 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses. HNV 32 Now the prey, over and above the booty which the men of war took, was six hundred seventy-five thousand sheep, NIV 32 The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep, HNV 33 and seventy-two thousand oxen, NIV 33 72,000 cattle, HNV 34 and seventy-one thousand donkeys, NIV 34 61,000 donkeys HNV 35 and thirty-two thousand persons in all, of the women who had not known man by lying with him. NIV 35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man. HNV 36 The half, which was the portion of those who went out to war, was in number three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep: NIV 36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was: HNV 37 and the LORD's tribute of the sheep was six hundred seventy-five. NIV 37 of which the tribute for the LORD was 675; HNV 38 The oxen were thirty-six thousand; of which the LORD's tribute was seventy-two. NIV 38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the LORD was 72; HNV 39 The donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred; of which the LORD's tribute was sixty-one. NIV 39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the LORD was 61; HNV 40 The persons were sixteen thousand; of whom the LORD's tribute was thirty-two persons. NIV 40 16,000 people, of which the tribute for the LORD was 32. HNV 41 Moshe gave the tribute, which was the LORD's heave-offering, to El`azar the Kohen, as the LORD commanded Moshe. NIV 41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the LORD's part, as the LORD commanded Moses. HNV 42 Of the children of Yisra'el's half, which Moshe divided off from the men who warred NIV 42 The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men-- HNV 43 (now the congregation's half was three hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep, NIV 43 the community's half--was 337,500 sheep, HNV 44 and thirty-six thousand oxen, NIV 44 36,000 cattle, HNV 45 and thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, NIV 45 30,500 donkeys HNV 46 and sixteen thousand persons), NIV 46 and 16,000 people. HNV 47 even of the children of Yisra'el's half, Moshe took one drawn out of every fifty, both of man and of animal, and gave them to the Levites, who kept the charge of the tent of the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moshe. NIV 47 From the Israelites' half, Moses selected one out of every fifty persons and animals, as the LORD commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the LORD's tabernacle. HNV 48 The officers who were over the thousands of the host, the captains of thousands, and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moshe; NIV 48 Then the officers who were over the units of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--went to Moses HNV 49 and they said to Moshe, Your servants have taken the sum of the men of war who are under our charge, and there lacks not one man of us. NIV 49 and said to him, "Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing. HNV 50 We have brought the LORD's offering, what every man has gotten, of jewels of gold, ankle-chains, and bracelets, signet-rings, ear-rings, and armlets, to make atonement for our souls before the LORD. NIV 50 So we have brought as an offering to the LORD the gold articles each of us acquired--armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces--to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD." HNV 51 Moshe and El`azar the Kohen took the gold of them, even all worked jewels. NIV 51 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold--all the crafted articles. HNV 52 All the gold of the heave-offering that they offered up to the LORD, of the captains of thousands, and of the captains of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred fifty shekels. NIV 52 All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the LORD weighed 16,750 shekels. HNV 53 ([For] the men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.) NIV 53 Each soldier had taken plunder for himself. HNV 54 Moshe and El`azar the Kohen took the gold of the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, for a memorial for the children of Yisra'el before the LORD. NIV 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the Tent of Meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the LORD.
