Numbers 32

GNT 1 The tribes of Reuben and Gad had a lot of livestock. When they saw how suitable the land of Jazer and Gilead was for cattle, NIV 1 The Reubenites and Gadites, who had very large herds and flocks, saw that the lands of Jazer and Gilead were suitable for livestock. GNT 2 they went to Moses, Eleazar, and the other leaders of the community and said, NIV 2 So they came to Moses and Eleazar the priest and to the leaders of the community, and said, GNT 3 "This region which the Lord has helped the Israelites occupy - the towns of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sibmah, Nebo, and Beon - is good land for livestock, and we have so much livestock. NIV 3 "Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon-- GNT 5 Please give us this land as our property, and do not make us cross the Jordan River and settle there." NIV 5 If we have found favor in your eyes," they said, "let this land be given to your servants as our possession. Do not make us cross the Jordan." GNT 6 Moses replied, "Do you want to stay here while the other Israelites go to war? NIV 6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, "Shall your countrymen go to war while you sit here? GNT 7 How dare you try to discourage the people of Israel from crossing the Jordan into the land which the Lord has given them? NIV 7 Why do you discourage the Israelites from going over into the land the LORD has given them? GNT 8 That is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. NIV 8 This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look over the land. GNT 9 They went as far as Eshcol Valley and saw the land, but when they returned, they discouraged the people from entering the land which the Lord had given them. NIV 9 After they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the LORD had given them. GNT 10 The Lord became angry that day and made a promise: NIV 10 The LORD's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath: GNT 11 "I swear that because they did not remain loyal to me, none of the men twenty years old or older who came out of Egypt will enter the land that I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.' NIV 11 'Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years old or more who came up out of Egypt will see the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob-- GNT 12 This included everyone, except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun; they remained loyal to the Lord. NIV 12 not one except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, for they followed the LORD wholeheartedly.' GNT 13 The Lord became angry with the people and made them wander in the wilderness forty years until that whole generation that had displeased him was dead. NIV 13 The LORD's anger burned against Israel and he made them wander in the desert forty years, until the whole generation of those who had done evil in his sight was gone. GNT 14 And now you have taken your ancestors' place, a new generation of sinful people ready to bring down the fierce anger of the Lord on Israel again. NIV 14 "And here you are, a brood of sinners, standing in the place of your fathers and making the LORD even more angry with Israel. GNT 15 If you people of Reuben and Gad refuse to follow him now, he will once again abandon all these people in the wilderness, and you will be responsible for their destruction." NIV 15 If you turn away from following him, he will again leave all this people in the desert, and you will be the cause of their destruction." GNT 16 They approached Moses and said, "First, allow us to build stone enclosures here for our sheep and fortified towns for our dependents. NIV 16 Then they came up to him and said, "We would like to build pens here for our livestock and cities for our women and children. GNT 17 Then we will be ready to go with the other Israelites into battle and lead the attack until we have settled them in the land that will be theirs. In the meantime, our dependents can live here in the fortified towns, safe from the people of this land. NIV 17 But we are ready to arm ourselves and go ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them to their place. Meanwhile our women and children will live in fortified cities, for protection from the inhabitants of the land. GNT 18 We will not return to our homes until all the other Israelites have taken possession of the land assigned to them. NIV 18 We will not return to our homes until every Israelite has received his inheritance. GNT 19 We will not take possession of any property among them on the other side of the Jordan, because we have received our share here east of the Jordan." NIV 19 We will not receive any inheritance with them on the other side of the Jordan, because our inheritance has come to us on the east side of the Jordan." GNT 20 Moses answered, "If you really mean what you say, then here in the presence of the Lord get ready to go into battle. NIV 20 Then Moses said to them, "If you will do this--if you will arm yourselves before the LORD for battle, GNT 21 All your fighting men are to cross the Jordan and under the command of the Lord they are to attack our enemies until the Lord defeats them NIV 21 and if all of you will go armed over the Jordan before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out before him-- GNT 22 and takes possession of the land. After that, you may return, because you will have fulfilled your obligation to the Lord and to the other Israelites. Then the Lord will acknowledge that this land east of the Jordan is yours. NIV 22 then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free from your obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will be your possession before the LORD. GNT 23 But if you do not keep your promise, I warn you that you will be sinning against the Lord. Make no mistake about it; you will be punished for your sin. NIV 23 "But if you fail to do this, you will be sinning against the LORD; and you may be sure that your sin will find you out. GNT 24 So build your towns and the enclosures for your sheep, but do what you have promised!" NIV 24 Build cities for your women and children, and pens for your flocks, but do what you have promised." GNT 25 The men of Gad and Reuben said, "Sir, we will do as you command. NIV 25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, "We your servants will do as our lord commands. GNT 26 Our wives and children and our cattle and sheep will remain here in the towns of Gilead. NIV 26 Our children and wives, our flocks and herds will remain here in the cities of Gilead. GNT 27 But all of us are ready to go into battle under the Lord's command. We will cross the Jordan and fight, just as you have said." NIV 27 But your servants, every man armed for battle, will cross over to fight before the LORD, just as our lord says." GNT 28 So Moses gave these commands to Eleazar, Joshua, and the other leaders of Israel: NIV 28 Then Moses gave orders about them to Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun and to the family heads of the Israelite tribes. GNT 29 "If the men of Gad and Reuben cross the Jordan ready for battle at the Lord's command and if with their help you are able to conquer the land, then give them the land of Gilead as their property. NIV 29 He said to them, "If the Gadites and Reubenites, every man armed for battle, cross over the Jordan with you before the LORD, then when the land is subdued before you, give them the land of Gilead as their possession. GNT 30 But if they do not cross the Jordan and go into battle with you, they are to receive their share of the property in the land of Canaan, as you do." NIV 30 But if they do not cross over with you armed, they must accept their possession with you in Canaan." GNT 31 The men of Gad and Reuben answered, "Sir, we will do as the Lord has commanded. NIV 31 The Gadites and Reubenites answered, "Your servants will do what the LORD has said. GNT 32 Under his command we will cross into the land of Canaan and go into battle, so that we can retain our property here east of the Jordan." NIV 32 We will cross over before the LORD into Canaan armed, but the property we inherit will be on this side of the Jordan." GNT 33 So Moses assigned to the tribes of Gad and Reuben and to half the tribe of Manasseh all the territory of King Sihon of the Amorites and King Og of Bashan, including the towns and the country around them. NIV 33 Then Moses gave to the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan--the whole land with its cities and the territory around them. GNT 34 The tribe of Gad rebuilt the fortified towns of Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, NIV 34 The Gadites built up Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer, GNT 35 Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, NIV 35 Atroth Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah, GNT 36 Beth Nimrah, and Beth Haran. NIV 36 Beth Nimrah and Beth Haran as fortified cities, and built pens for their flocks. GNT 37 The tribe of Reuben rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim, NIV 37 And the Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh and Kiriathaim, GNT 38 Nebo, Baal Meon (this name was changed), and Sibmah. They gave new names to the towns they rebuilt. NIV 38 as well as Nebo and Baal Meon (these names were changed) and Sibmah. They gave names to the cities they rebuilt. GNT 39 The clan of Machir son of Manasseh invaded the land of Gilead, occupied it, and drove out the Amorites who were there. NIV 39 The descendants of Makir son of Manasseh went to Gilead, captured it and drove out the Amorites who were there. GNT 40 So Moses gave Gilead to the clan of Machir, and they lived there. NIV 40 So Moses gave Gilead to the Makirites, the descendants of Manasseh, and they settled there. GNT 41 Jair, of the tribe of Manasseh, attacked and captured some villages and named them "Villages of Jair." NIV 41 Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, captured their settlements and called them Havvoth Jair. GNT 42 Nobah attacked and captured Kenath and its villages, and he renamed it Nobah, after himself. NIV 42 And Nobah captured Kenath and its surrounding settlements and called it Nobah after himself.
