1 Migliore è un boccon di pane secco, con quiete, Che una casa piena di animali ammazzati, con rissa.

2 Il servitore intendente signoreggerà sopra il figliuolo che reca vituperio, E spartirà l’eredità tra i fratelli.

3 La coppella è per l’argento, e il fornello per l’oro; Ma il Signore prova i cuori.

4 L’uomo maligno presta gli orecchi alle labbra inique; E l’ingannatore ascolta la lingua maliziosa.

5 Chi beffa il povero fa onta a colui che l’ha fatto; Chi si rallegra della calamità altrui non resterà impunito.

6 I figliuoli de’ figliuoli son la corona de’ vecchi; E i padri son la gloria de’ figliuoli.

7 Il parlar magnifico non è decevole all’uomo da nulla; Quanto meno al principe il labbro falso!

8 Il presente è, appo chi è dato a ricever presenti, una gioia graziosa; Dovunque si volge produce effetto.

9 Chi copre il fallo procaccia amicizia; Ma chi lo ridice disunisce gli amici.

10 La riprensione scende più addentro nell’uomo intendente, Che cento percosse date allo stolto.

11 Il malvagio non cerca altro che ribellione; Ma l’angelo crudele sarà mandato contro a lui.

12 Scontrisi pure in un uomo un’orsa, a cui sieno stati tolti i suoi figli, Anzi che un pazzo nella sua pazzia.

13 Il male non si dipartirà giammai dalla casa Di chi rende il mal per lo bene.

14 Chi comincia la contesa è come chi dà apritura alle acque; Però avanti che si venga alle contumelie, lascia la questione.

15 Chi assolve il reo, e chi condanna il giusto, Sono amendue ugualmente abbominevoli al Signore.

16 A che serve il prezzo in mano allo stolto, Da comperar sapienza, poichè egli non ha alcun senno?

17 L’amico ama in ogni tempo, E il fratello nasce per l’afflizione.

18 L’uomo scemo di senno tocca la mano, E fa sicurtà al suo prossimo.

19 Chi ama contesa ama misfatto; Chi alza la sua porta cerca ruina.

20 L’uomo perverso di cuore non troverà il bene; E l’uomo stravolto nel suo parlare caderà nel male.

21 Chi genera un pazzo lo genera a suo cordoglio; E il padre dello stolto non si rallegrerà.

22 Il cuore allegro giova, come una medicina; Ma lo spirito afflitto secca le ossa.

23 L’empio prende il presente dal seno, Per pervertir le vie del giudicio.

24 La sapienza è nel cospetto dell’intendente; Ma gli occhi dello stolto riguardano alle estremità della terra.

25 Il figliuolo stolto è sdegno a suo padre, Ed amaritudine a colei che l’ha partorito.

26 Egli non è bene di condannare il giusto, non pure ad ammenda, Nè che i principi battano alcuno per dirittura.

27 Chi rattiene i suoi detti è dotato di conoscimento; E chi è di spirito riservato è uomo intendente.

28 Lo stolto stesso è reputato savio, quando si tace; E prudente, quando tiene le labbra chiuse.

1 Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife.

2 A prudent servant will rule over a disgraceful son and will share the inheritance as one of the family.

3 The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the LORD tests the heart.

4 A wicked person listens to deceitful lips; a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.

5 Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.

6 Children’s children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.

7 Eloquent lips are unsuited to a godless fool— how much worse lying lips to a ruler!

8 A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it; they think success will come at every turn.

9 Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.

10 A rebuke impresses a discerning person more than a hundred lashes a fool.

11 Evildoers foster rebellion against God; the messenger of death will be sent against them.

12 Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool bent on folly.

13 Evil will never leave the house of one who pays back evil for good.

14 Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

15 Acquitting the guilty and condemning the innocent— the LORD detests them both.

16 Why should fools have money in hand to buy wisdom, when they are not able to understand it?

17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.

18 One who has no sense shakes hands in pledge and puts up security for a neighbor.

19 Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin; whoever builds a high gate invites destruction.

20 One whose heart is corrupt does not prosper; one whose tongue is perverse falls into trouble.

21 To have a fool for a child brings grief; there is no joy for the parent of a godless fool.

22 A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.

23 The wicked accept bribes in secret to pervert the course of justice.

24 A discerning person keeps wisdom in view, but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth.

25 A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the mother who bore him.

26 If imposing a fine on the innocent is not good, surely to flog honest officials is not right.

27 The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.

28 Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.
