Proverbs 1

CJB 1 The proverbs of Shlomo the son of David, king of Isra'el, NIV 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: CJB 2 are for learning about wisdom and discipline; for understanding words expressing deep insight; NIV 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; CJB 3 for gaining an intelligently disciplined life, doing what is right, just and fair; NIV 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; CJB 4 for endowing with caution those who don't think and the young person with knowledge and discretion. NIV 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young-- CJB 5 Someone who is already wise will hear and learn still more; someone who already understands will gain the ability to counsel well; NIV 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance-- CJB 6 he will understand proverbs, obscure expressions, the sayings and riddles of the wise. NIV 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. CJB 7 The fear of ADONAI is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. NIV 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. CJB 8 My son, heed the discipline of your father, and do not abandon the teaching of your mother; NIV 8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. CJB 9 they will be a garland to grace your head, a medal of honor for your neck. NIV 9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. CJB 10 My son, if sinners entice you, don't go along with them. NIV 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. CJB 11 Suppose they say, "Come with us: we'll ambush somebody and kill him, we'll waylay some harmless soul, just for fun; NIV 11 If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for someone's blood, let's waylay some harmless soul; CJB 12 we'll swallow him alive, like Sh'ol, whole, like those who descend to the pit; NIV 12 let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; CJB 13 we'll find everything he has of value, we'll fill our homes with loot! NIV 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; CJB 14 Throw in your lot with us; we'll share a common purse"- NIV 14 throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse"-- CJB 15 my son, don't go along with them, don't set foot on their path; NIV 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; CJB 16 Their feet run to evil, they rush to shed blood. NIV 16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood. CJB 17 For in vain is the net baited if any bird can see it; NIV 17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds! CJB 18 rather, they are ambushing themselves to shed their own blood, waylaying themselves. NIV 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves! CJB 19 So are the ways of all greedy for gain -it takes the lives of those who get it. NIV 19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it. CJB 20 Wisdom calls aloud in the open air and raises her voice in the public places; NIV 20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares; CJB 21 she calls out at streetcorners and speaks out at entrances to city gates: NIV 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech: CJB 22 "How long, you whose lives have no purpose, will you love thoughtless living? How long will scorners find pleasure in mocking? How long will fools hate knowledge? NIV 22 "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? CJB 23 Repent when I reprove -I will pour out my spirit to you, I will make my words known to you. NIV 23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you. CJB 24 Because you refused when I called, and no one paid attention when I put out my hand, NIV 24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand, CJB 25 but instead you neglected my counsel and would not accept my reproof; NIV 25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke, CJB 26 I, in turn, will laugh at your distress, and mock when terror comes over you NIV 26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you-- CJB 27 yes, when terror overtakes you like a storm and your disaster approaches like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble assail you. NIV 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. CJB 28 Then they will call me, but I won't answer; they will seek me earnestly, but they won't find me. NIV 28 "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me. CJB 29 Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of ADONAI, NIV 29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD, CJB 30 they refused my counsel and despised my reproof. NIV 30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, CJB 31 So they will bear the consequences of their own way and be overfilled with their own schemes. NIV 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. CJB 32 For the aimless wandering of the thoughtless will kill them, and the smug overconfidence of fools will destroy them; NIV 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; CJB 33 but those who pay attention to me will live securely, untroubled by fear of misfortune." NIV 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."
