Proverbs 1

LEB 1 Proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: NIV 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: LEB 2 To know wisdom and instruction, to understand sayings of understanding, NIV 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; LEB 3 to gain {insightful instruction}, righteousness and justice and equity, NIV 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; LEB 4 to give shrewdness to the simple, knowledge and purpose to the young, NIV 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young-- LEB 5 may the wise hear and increase learning, and the one who understands gain direction, NIV 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance-- LEB 6 to understand a proverb and an expression, words of wisdom and their riddles. NIV 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. LEB 7 Fear of Yahweh [is the] beginning of knowledge; wisdom and instruction, fools despise. NIV 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. LEB 8 My child, may you keep your father's instruction, and do not reject your mother's teachings, NIV 8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. LEB 9 for they [are] a garland of favor for your head, and pendants for your neck. NIV 9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. LEB 10 My child, if sinners entice you, do not consent. NIV 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. LEB 11 If they say, "Come with us! We shall lie in wait for blood; we shall ambush the innocent without cause. NIV 11 If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for someone's blood, let's waylay some harmless soul; LEB 12 Like Sheol, we will swallow them alive and whole, {like those who descend to the pit}. NIV 12 let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; LEB 13 We shall find all precious wealth, we shall fill our houses [with] booty, NIV 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; LEB 14 you shall throw your lot in our midst, there will be one purse for all of us." NIV 14 throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse"-- LEB 15 My child, do not walk in their way. Keep your foot from their paths, NIV 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; LEB 16 for their feet run to evil, and they hurry to shed blood, NIV 16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood. LEB 17 for "in vain is the net scattered, in the sight of any {winged bird}." NIV 17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds! LEB 18 They lie in wait for their [own] blood. They ambush their [own] lives. NIV 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves! LEB 19 Thus are the ways of all who are greedy [for] gain-- it will take the life of its possessors. NIV 19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it. LEB 20 Wisdom calls out in the streets, in the squares she raises her voice. NIV 20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares; LEB 21 On a {busy corner} she cries out, at the entrances of the gates in the city, she speaks her sayings: NIV 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech: LEB 22 "{How long}, O simple ones, will you love simplicity? And [how long] will scoffers delight in their scoffing, and fools hate knowledge? NIV 22 "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? LEB 23 May you turn to my argument! Behold, I shall pour out my spirit upon you; I will make my words known to you. NIV 23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you. LEB 24 Because I called out and you refused me, I stretched out my hand, yet there is none who heeds. NIV 24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand, LEB 25 You have ignored all my counsel, and my reproof you are not willing [to accept]. NIV 25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke, LEB 26 I will also laugh at your calamity; I will mock when panic comes [upon] you. NIV 26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you-- LEB 27 When your panic comes like a storm, and your calamity arrives like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you, NIV 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. LEB 28 then they will call me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but not find me. NIV 28 "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me. LEB 29 Since they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of Yahweh, NIV 29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD, LEB 30 they were not willing [to accept] my counsel, they despised all my reproof. NIV 30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, LEB 31 They shall eat from the fruit of their way, and they shall be sated from their own schemes, NIV 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. LEB 32 for the waywardness of the simple ones will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. NIV 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; LEB 33 Whoever listens to me will dwell in security and rest securely from dread and disaster." NIV 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."
