TMB 1 The Proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel: NIV 1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: TMB 2 to know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; NIV 2 for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; TMB 3 to receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, judgment, and equity; NIV 3 for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; TMB 4 to give subtlety to the simple, and to the young man knowledge and discretion. NIV 4 for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young-- TMB 5 A wise man will hear and will increase learning, and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsel NIV 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance-- TMB 6 to understand a proverb and the interpretation, the words of the wise and their dark sayings. NIV 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. TMB 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. NIV 7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. TMB 8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother; NIV 8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction and do not forsake your mother's teaching. TMB 9 for they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. NIV 9 They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck. TMB 10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not. NIV 10 My son, if sinners entice you, do not give in to them. TMB 11 If they say, "Come with us; let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause; NIV 11 If they say, "Come along with us; let's lie in wait for someone's blood, let's waylay some harmless soul; TMB 12 let us swallow them up alive as the grave, and whole, as those that go down to the pit; NIV 12 let's swallow them alive, like the grave, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; TMB 13 we shall find much precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil; NIV 13 we will get all sorts of valuable things and fill our houses with plunder; TMB 14 cast in thy lot among us, let us all have one purse"" NIV 14 throw in your lot with us, and we will share a common purse"-- TMB 15 my son, walk not thou in the way with them; restrain thy foot from their path; NIV 15 my son, do not go along with them, do not set foot on their paths; TMB 16 for their feet run to evil and make haste to shed blood. NIV 16 for their feet rush into sin, they are swift to shed blood. TMB 17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird! NIV 17 How useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds! TMB 18 And they lie in wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives. NIV 18 These men lie in wait for their own blood; they waylay only themselves! TMB 19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy for gain, which taketh away the life of the owners thereof. NIV 19 Such is the end of all who go after ill-gotten gain; it takes away the lives of those who get it. TMB 20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets. NIV 20 Wisdom calls aloud in the street, she raises her voice in the public squares; TMB 21 She crieth in the chief places of concourse, in the openings of the gates; in the city she uttereth her words, saying, NIV 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out, in the gateways of the city she makes her speech: TMB 22 "How long, ye simple ones, will ye love to be simple, and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? NIV 22 "How long will you simple ones love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? TMB 23 Turn you at my reproof: Behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you; I will make known my words unto you. NIV 23 If you had responded to my rebuke, I would have poured out my heart to you and made my thoughts known to you. TMB 24 "Because I have called and ye refused, I have stretched out my hand and no man heeded, NIV 24 But since you rejected me when I called and no one gave heed when I stretched out my hand, TMB 25 but ye have set at nought all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, NIV 25 since you ignored all my advice and would not accept my rebuke, TMB 26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh, NIV 26 I in turn will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when calamity overtakes you-- TMB 27 when your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind, when distress and anguish cometh upon you. NIV 27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind, when distress and trouble overwhelm you. TMB 28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me, NIV 28 "Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me. TMB 29 because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD. NIV 29 Since they hated knowledge and did not choose to fear the LORD, TMB 30 They would have none of my counsel, and they despised all my reproof: NIV 30 since they would not accept my advice and spurned my rebuke, TMB 31 therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own ways, and be filled with their own devices. NIV 31 they will eat the fruit of their ways and be filled with the fruit of their schemes. TMB 32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them; NIV 32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; TMB 33 but whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall have quiet from fear of evil." NIV 33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm."
