Proverbs 10

DBY 1 The Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father; but a foolish son is the grief of his mother. NIV 1 The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish son grief to his mother. DBY 2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing; but righteousness delivereth from death. NIV 2 Ill-gotten treasures are of no value, but righteousness delivers from death. DBY 3 Jehovah suffereth not the soul of the righteous [man] to famish; but he repelleth the craving of the wicked. NIV 3 The LORD does not let the righteous go hungry but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. DBY 4 He cometh to want that dealeth with a slack hand; but the hand of the diligent maketh rich. NIV 4 Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. DBY 5 He that gathereth in summer is a wise son; he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame. NIV 5 He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son. DBY 6 Blessings are upon the head of a righteous [man]; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence. NIV 6 Blessings crown the head of the righteous, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. DBY 7 The memory of the righteous [man] shall be blessed; but the name of the wicked shall rot. NIV 7 The memory of the righteous will be a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot. DBY 8 The wise in heart receiveth commandments; but a prating fool shall fall. NIV 8 The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin. DBY 9 He that walketh in integrity walketh securely; but he that perverteth his ways shall be known. NIV 9 The man of integrity walks securely, but he who takes crooked paths will be found out. DBY 10 He that winketh with the eye causeth grief, and a prating fool shall fall. NIV 10 He who winks maliciously causes grief, and a chattering fool comes to ruin. DBY 11 The mouth of a righteous [man] is a fountain of life; but the mouth of the wicked covereth violence. NIV 11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. DBY 12 Hatred stirreth up strifes; but love covereth all transgressions. NIV 12 Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs. DBY 13 In the lips of an intelligent [man] wisdom is found; but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding. NIV 13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment. DBY 14 The wise lay up knowledge; but the mouth of the fool is near destruction. NIV 14 Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin. DBY 15 The rich man's wealth is his strong city; the destruction of the poor is their poverty. NIV 15 The wealth of the rich is their fortified city, but poverty is the ruin of the poor. DBY 16 The labour of a righteous [man] [tendeth] to life; the revenue of a wicked [man], to sin. NIV 16 The wages of the righteous bring them life, but the income of the wicked brings them punishment. DBY 17 Keeping instruction is the path to life; but he that forsaketh reproof goeth astray. NIV 17 He who heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray. DBY 18 He that covereth hatred hath lying lips, and he that sendeth forth a slander is a fool. NIV 18 He who conceals his hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool. DBY 19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression; but he that restraineth his lips doeth wisely. NIV 19 When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. DBY 20 The tongue of the righteous [man] is [as] choice silver; the heart of the wicked is little worth. NIV 20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value. DBY 21 The lips of a righteous [man] feed many; but fools die for want of understanding. NIV 21 The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgment. DBY 22 The blessing of Jehovah, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow to it. NIV 22 The blessing of the LORD brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it. DBY 23 It is as sport to a foolish [man] to do wickedness; but a man of understanding hath wisdom. NIV 23 A fool finds pleasure in evil conduct, but a man of understanding delights in wisdom. DBY 24 The fear of a wicked [man], it shall come upon him; but the desire of the righteous shall be granted. NIV 24 What the wicked dreads will overtake him; what the righteous desire will be granted. DBY 25 As a whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no [more]; but the righteous is an everlasting foundation. NIV 25 When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone, but the righteous stand firm forever. DBY 26 As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the sluggard to them that send him. NIV 26 As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, so is a sluggard to those who send him. DBY 27 The fear of Jehovah prolongeth days; but the years of the wicked shall be shortened. NIV 27 The fear of the LORD adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short. DBY 28 The hope of the righteous is joy; but the expectation of the wicked shall perish. NIV 28 The prospect of the righteous is joy, but the hopes of the wicked come to nothing. DBY 29 The way of Jehovah is strength to the perfect [man], but destruction to the workers of iniquity. NIV 29 The way of the LORD is a refuge for the righteous, but it is the ruin of those who do evil. DBY 30 The righteous [man] shall never be moved; but the wicked shall not inhabit the land. NIV 30 The righteous will never be uprooted, but the wicked will not remain in the land. DBY 31 The mouth of a righteous [man] putteth forth wisdom; but the froward tongue shall be cut out. NIV 31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out. DBY 32 The lips of a righteous [man] know what is acceptable; but the mouth of the wicked is frowardness. NIV 32 The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse.
