Proverbs 15

ASV 1 A soft answer turneth away wrath; But a grievous word stirreth up anger. NIV 1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. ASV 2 The tongue of the wise uttereth knowledge aright; But the mouth of fools poureth out folly. NIV 2 The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. ASV 3 The eyes of Jehovah are in every place, Keeping watch upon the evil and the good. NIV 3 The eyes of the LORD are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good. ASV 4 A gentle tongue is a tree of life; But perverseness therein is a breaking of the spirit. NIV 4 The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. ASV 5 A fool despiseth his father's correction; But he that regardeth reproof getteth prudence. NIV 5 A fool spurns his father's discipline, but whoever heeds correction shows prudence. ASV 6 In the house of the righteous is much treasure; But in the revenues of the wicked is trouble. NIV 6 The house of the righteous contains great treasure, but the income of the wicked brings them trouble. ASV 7 The lips of the wise disperse knowledge; But the heart of the foolish [doeth] not so. NIV 7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge; not so the hearts of fools. ASV 8 The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to Jehovah; But the prayer of the upright is his delight. NIV 8 The LORD detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the prayer of the upright pleases him. ASV 9 The way of the wicked is an abomination to Jehovah; But he loveth him that followeth after righteousness. NIV 9 The LORD detests the way of the wicked but he loves those who pursue righteousness. ASV 10 There is grievous correction for him that forsaketh the way; [And] he that hateth reproof shall die. NIV 10 Stern discipline awaits him who leaves the path; he who hates correction will die. ASV 11 Sheol and Abaddon are before Jehovah: How much more then the hearts of the children of men! NIV 11 Death and Destruction lie open before the LORD -- how much more the hearts of men! ASV 12 A scoffer loveth not to be reproved; He will not go unto the wise. NIV 12 A mocker resents correction; he will not consult the wise. ASV 13 A glad heart maketh a cheerful countenance; But by sorrow of heart the spirit is broken. NIV 13 A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. ASV 14 The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge; But the mouth of fools feedeth on folly. NIV 14 The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly. ASV 15 All the days of the afflicted are evil; But he that is of a cheerful heart [hath] a continual feast. NIV 15 All the days of the oppressed are wretched, but the cheerful heart has a continual feast. ASV 16 Better is little, with the fear of Jehovah, Than great treasure and trouble therewith. NIV 16 Better a little with the fear of the LORD than great wealth with turmoil. ASV 17 Better is a dinner of herbs, where love is, Than a stalled ox and hatred therewith. NIV 17 Better a meal of vegetables where there is love than a fattened calf with hatred. ASV 18 A wrathful man stirreth up contention; But he that is slow to anger appeaseth strife. NIV 18 A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel. ASV 19 The way of the sluggard is as a hedge of thorns; But the path of the upright is made a highway. NIV 19 The way of the sluggard is blocked with thorns, but the path of the upright is a highway. ASV 20 A wise son maketh a glad father; But a foolish man despiseth his mother. NIV 20 A wise son brings joy to his father, but a foolish man despises his mother. ASV 21 Folly is joy to him that is void of wisdom; But a man of understanding maketh straight his going. NIV 21 Folly delights a man who lacks judgment, but a man of understanding keeps a straight course. ASV 22 Where there is no counsel, purposes are disappointed; But in the multitude of counsellors they are established. NIV 22 Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. ASV 23 A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth; And a word in due season, how good is it! NIV 23 A man finds joy in giving an apt reply-- and how good is a timely word! ASV 24 To the wise the way of life [goeth] upward, That he may depart from Sheol beneath. NIV 24 The path of life leads upward for the wise to keep him from going down to the grave. ASV 25 Jehovah will root up the house of the proud; But he will establish the border of the widow. NIV 25 The LORD tears down the proud man's house but he keeps the widow's boundaries intact. ASV 26 Evil devices are an abomination to Jehovah; But pleasant words [are] pure. NIV 26 The LORD detests the thoughts of the wicked, but those of the pure are pleasing to him. ASV 27 He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house; But he that hateth bribes shall live. NIV 27 A greedy man brings trouble to his family, but he who hates bribes will live. ASV 28 The heart of the righteous studieth to answer; But the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things. NIV 28 The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil. ASV 29 Jehovah is far from the wicked; But he heareth the prayer of the righteous. NIV 29 The LORD is far from the wicked but he hears the prayer of the righteous. ASV 30 The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart; [And] good tidings make the bones fat. NIV 30 A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones. ASV 31 The ear that hearkeneth to the reproof of life Shall abide among the wise. NIV 31 He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise. ASV 32 He that refuseth correction despiseth his own soul; But he that hearkeneth to reproof getteth understanding. NIV 32 He who ignores discipline despises himself, but whoever heeds correction gains understanding. ASV 33 The fear of Jehovah is the instruction of wisdom; And before honor [goeth] humility. NIV 33 The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor.
