Proverbs 19

NAS 1 Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity Than he who is perverse in speech and is a fool. NIV 1 Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a fool whose lips are perverse. NAS 2 Also it is not good for a person to be without knowledge, And he who hurries his footsteps errs. NIV 2 It is not good to have zeal without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way. NAS 3 The foolishness of man ruins his way, And his heart rages against the LORD . NIV 3 A man's own folly ruins his life, yet his heart rages against the LORD. NAS 4 Wealth adds many friends, But a poor man is separated from his friend. NIV 4 Wealth brings many friends, but a poor man's friend deserts him. NAS 5 A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who tells lies will not escape. NIV 5 A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will not go free. NAS 6 Many will seek the favor of a generous man, And every man is a friend to him who gives gifts. NIV 6 Many curry favor with a ruler, and everyone is the friend of a man who gives gifts. NAS 7 All the brothers of a poor man hate him; How much more do his friends abandon him! He pursues them with words, but they are gone. NIV 7 A poor man is shunned by all his relatives-- how much more do his friends avoid him! Though he pursues them with pleading, they are nowhere to be found. NAS 8 He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; He who keeps understanding will find good. NIV 8 He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; he who cherishes understanding prospers. NAS 9 A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who tells lies will perish. NIV 9 A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will perish. NAS 10 Luxury is not fitting for a fool; Much less for a slave to rule over princes. NIV 10 It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury-- how much worse for a slave to rule over princes! NAS 11 A man's discretion makes him slow to anger, And it is his glory to overlook a transgression. NIV 11 A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offense. NAS 12 The king's wrath is like the roaring of a lion, But his favor is like dew on the grass. NIV 12 A king's rage is like the roar of a lion, but his favor is like dew on the grass. NAS 13 A foolish son is destruction to his father, And the contentions of a wife are a constant dripping. NIV 13 A foolish son is his father's ruin, and a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping. NAS 14 House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the LORD . NIV 14 Houses and wealth are inherited from parents, but a prudent wife is from the LORD. NAS 15 Laziness casts into a deep sleep, And an idle man will suffer hunger. NIV 15 Laziness brings on deep sleep, and the shiftless man goes hungry. NAS 16 He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, But he who is careless of conduct will die. NIV 16 He who obeys instructions guards his life, but he who is contemptuous of his ways will die. NAS 17 One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD , And He will repay him for his good deed. NIV 17 He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done. NAS 18 Discipline your son while there is hope, And do not desire his death. NIV 18 Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death. NAS 19 A man of great anger will bear the penalty, For if you rescue him, you will only have to do it again. NIV 19 A hot-tempered man must pay the penalty; if you rescue him, you will have to do it again. NAS 20 Listen to counsel and accept discipline, That you may be wise the rest of your days. NIV 20 Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise. NAS 21 Many plans are in a man's heart, But the counsel of the LORD will stand. NIV 21 Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails. NAS 22 What is desirable in a man is his kindness, And it is better to be a poor man than a liar . NIV 22 What a man desires is unfailing love; better to be poor than a liar. NAS 23 The fear of the LORD leads to life, So that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil. NIV 23 The fear of the LORD leads to life: Then one rests content, untouched by trouble. NAS 24 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish, But will not even bring it back to his mouth. NAS 25 Strike a scoffer and the naive may become shrewd, But reprove one who has understanding and he will gain knowledge. NIV 25 Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge. NAS 26 He who assaults his father and drives his mother away Is a shameful and disgraceful son. NIV 26 He who robs his father and drives out his mother is a son who brings shame and disgrace. NAS 27 Cease listening, my son, to discipline, And you will stray from the words of knowledge. NIV 27 Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. NAS 28 A rascally witness makes a mockery of justice, And the mouth of the wicked spreads iniquity. NIV 28 A corrupt witness mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil. NAS 29 Judgments are prepared for scoffers, And blows for the back of fools. NIV 29 Penalties are prepared for mockers, and beatings for the backs of fools.
