Proverbs 20

ASV 1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler; And whosoever erreth thereby is not wise. NIV 1 Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever is led astray by them is not wise. ASV 2 The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion: He that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life. NIV 2 A king's wrath is like the roar of a lion; he who angers him forfeits his life. ASV 3 It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife; But every fool will be quarrelling. NIV 3 It is to a man's honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel. ASV 4 The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter; Therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing. NIV 4 A sluggard does not plow in season; so at harvest time he looks but finds nothing. ASV 5 Counsel in the heart of man is [like] deep water; But a man of understanding will draw it out. NIV 5 The purposes of a man's heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out. ASV 6 Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness; But a faithful man who can find? NIV 6 Many a man claims to have unfailing love, but a faithful man who can find? ASV 7 A righteous man that walketh in his integrity, Blessed are his children after him. NIV 7 The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him. ASV 8 A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment Scattereth away all evil with his eyes. NIV 8 When a king sits on his throne to judge, he winnows out all evil with his eyes. ASV 9 Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin? NIV 9 Who can say, "I have kept my heart pure; I am clean and without sin"? ASV 10 Diverse weights, and diverse measures, Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah. NIV 10 Differing weights and differing measures-- the LORD detests them both. ASV 11 Even a child maketh himself known by his doings, Whether his work be pure, and whether it be right. NIV 11 Even a child is known by his actions, by whether his conduct is pure and right. ASV 12 The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, Jehovah hath made even both of them. NIV 12 Ears that hear and eyes that see-- the LORD has made them both. ASV 13 Love not sleep, let thou come to poverty; Open thine eyes, [and] thou shalt be satisfied with bread. NIV 13 Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare. ASV 14 It is bad, it is bad, saith the buyer; But when he is gone his way, then he boasteth. NIV 14 "It's no good, it's no good!" says the buyer; then off he goes and boasts about his purchase. ASV 15 There is gold, and abundance of rubies; But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. NIV 15 Gold there is, and rubies in abundance, but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel. ASV 16 Take his garment that is surety for a stranger; And hold him in pledge [that is surety] for foreigners. NIV 16 Take the garment of one who puts up security for a stranger; hold it in pledge if he does it for a wayward woman. ASV 17 Bread of falsehood is sweet to a man; But afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel. NIV 17 Food gained by fraud tastes sweet to a man, but he ends up with a mouth full of gravel. ASV 18 Every purpose is established by counsel; And by wise guidance make thou war. NIV 18 Make plans by seeking advice; if you wage war, obtain guidance. ASV 19 He that goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets; Therefore company not with him that openeth wide his lips. NIV 19 A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much. ASV 20 Whoso curseth his father or his mother, His lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness. NIV 20 If a man curses his father or mother, his lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness. ASV 21 An inheritance [may be] gotten hastily at the beginning; But the end thereof shall not be blessed. NIV 21 An inheritance quickly gained at the beginning will not be blessed at the end. ASV 22 Say not thou, I will recompense evil: Wait for Jehovah, and he will save thee. NIV 22 Do not say, "I'll pay you back for this wrong!" Wait for the LORD, and he will deliver you. ASV 23 Diverse weights are an abomination to Jehovah; And a false balance is not good. NIV 23 The LORD detests differing weights, and dishonest scales do not please him. ASV 24 A man's goings are of Jehovah; How then can man understand his way? NIV 24 A man's steps are directed by the LORD. How then can anyone understand his own way? ASV 25 It is a snare to a man rashly to say, [It is] holy, And after vows to make inquiry. NIV 25 It is a trap for a man to dedicate something rashly and only later to consider his vows. ASV 26 A wise king winnoweth the wicked, And bringeth the [threshing] -wheel over them. NIV 26 A wise king winnows out the wicked; he drives the threshing wheel over them. ASV 27 The spirit of man is the lamp of Jehovah, Searching all his innermost parts. NIV 27 The lamp of the LORD searches the spirit of a man; it searches out his inmost being. ASV 28 Kindness and truth preserve the king; And his throne is upholden by kindness. NIV 28 Love and faithfulness keep a king safe; through love his throne is made secure. ASV 29 The glory of young men is their strength; And the beauty of old men is the hoary head. NIV 29 The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old. ASV 30 Stripes that wound cleanse away evil; And strokes [reach] the innermost parts. NIV 30 Blows and wounds cleanse away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being.
