Proverbs 23

CSB 1 When you sit down to dine with a ruler, consider carefully what is before you, NIV 1 When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you, CSB 2 and stick a knife in your throat if you have a big appetite; NIV 2 and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony. CSB 3 don't desire his choice food, for that food is deceptive. NIV 3 Do not crave his delicacies, for that food is deceptive. NIV 20 Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, CSB 21 For the drunkard and the glutton will become poor, and grogginess will clothe [them] in rags. NIV 25 May your father and mother be glad; may she who gave you birth rejoice! CSB 26 My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? CSB 30 Those who linger over wine, those who go looking for mixed wine. NIV 30 Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. CSB 31 Don't gaze at wine when it is red, when it gleams in the cup and goes down smoothly. NIV 31 Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! CSB 35 "They struck me, but I feel no pain! They beat me, but I didn't know it! When will I wake up? I'll look for another [drink]." NIV 35 "They hit me," you will say, "but I'm not hurt! They beat me, but I don't feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?"
