Proverbs 4

CJB 1 Listen, children, to a father's instruction; pay attention, in order to gain insight; NIV 1 Listen, my sons, to a father's instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. CJB 2 for I am giving you good advice; so don't abandon my teaching. NIV 2 I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching. CJB 3 For I too was once a child to my father; and my mother, too, thought of me as her special darling. NIV 3 When I was a boy in my father's house, still tender, and an only child of my mother, CJB 4 He too taught me; he said to me, "Let your heart treasure my words; keep my commands, and live; NIV 4 he taught me and said, "Lay hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands and you will live. CJB 5 gain wisdom, gain insight; don't forget or turn from the words I am saying. NIV 5 Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them. CJB 6 Don't abandon [wisdom]; then she will preserve you; love her, and she will protect you. NIV 6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. CJB 7 The beginning of wisdom is: get wisdom! And along with all your getting, get insight! NIV 7 Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. CJB 8 Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will bring you honor; NIV 8 Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. CJB 9 she will give your head a garland of grace, bestow on you a crown of glory." NIV 9 She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor." CJB 10 Listen, my son, receive what I say, and the years of your life will be many. NIV 10 Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many. CJB 11 I'm directing you on the way of wisdom, guiding you in paths of uprightness; NIV 11 I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. CJB 12 when you walk, your step won't be hindered; and if you run, you won't stumble. NIV 12 When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble. CJB 13 Hold fast to discipline, don't let it go; guard it, for it is your life. NIV 13 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life. CJB 14 Don't follow the path of the wicked or walk on the way of evildoers. NIV 14 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men. CJB 15 Avoid it, don't go on it, turn away from it, and pass on. NIV 15 Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way. CJB 16 For they can't sleep if they haven't done evil, they are robbed of sleep unless they make someone fall. NIV 16 For they cannot sleep till they do evil; they are robbed of slumber till they make someone fall. CJB 17 For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. NIV 17 They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. CJB 18 But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, shining ever brighter until full daylight. NIV 18 The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. CJB 19 The way of the wicked is like darkness; they don't even know what makes them stumble. NIV 19 But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble. CJB 20 My son, pay attention to what I am saying; incline your ear to my words. NIV 20 My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. CJB 21 Don't let them out of your sight, keep them deep in your heart; NIV 21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; CJB 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to their whole being. NIV 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body. CJB 23 Above everything else, guard your heart; for it is the source of life's consequences. NIV 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. CJB 24 Keep crooked speech out of your mouth, banish deceit from your lips. NIV 24 Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. CJB 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze on what lies in front of you. NIV 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. CJB 26 Level the path for your feet, let all your ways be properly prepared; NIV 26 Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. CJB 27 then deviate neither right nor left; and keep your foot far from evil. NIV 27 Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.
