Proverbs 4

WBT 1 Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. NIV 1 Listen, my sons, to a father's instruction; pay attention and gain understanding. WBT 2 For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. NIV 2 I give you sound learning, so do not forsake my teaching. WBT 3 For I was my father's son, tender and only [beloved] in the sight of my mother. NIV 3 When I was a boy in my father's house, still tender, and an only child of my mother, WBT 4 He taught me also, and said to me, Let thy heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. NIV 4 he taught me and said, "Lay hold of my words with all your heart; keep my commands and you will live. WBT 5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget [it] not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. NIV 5 Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them. WBT 6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. NIV 6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. WBT 7 Wisdom [is] the principal thing; [therefore] get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. NIV 7 Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. WBT 8 Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honor, when thou dost embrace her. NIV 8 Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. WBT 9 She shall give to thy head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. NIV 9 She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor." WBT 10 Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. NIV 10 Listen, my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many. WBT 11 I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. NIV 11 I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. WBT 12 When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. NIV 12 When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble. WBT 13 Take fast hold of instruction; let [her] not go: keep her; for she [is] thy life. NIV 13 Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life. WBT 14 Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil [men]. NIV 14 Do not set foot on the path of the wicked or walk in the way of evil men. WBT 15 Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. NIV 15 Avoid it, do not travel on it; turn from it and go on your way. WBT 16 For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause [some] to fall. NIV 16 For they cannot sleep till they do evil; they are robbed of slumber till they make someone fall. WBT 17 For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. NIV 17 They eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence. WBT 18 But the path of the just [is] as the shining light, that shineth more and more to the perfect day. NIV 18 The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining ever brighter till the full light of day. WBT 19 The way of the wicked [is] as darkness: they know not at what they stumble. NIV 19 But the way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know what makes them stumble. WBT 20 My son, attend to my words; incline thy ear to my sayings. NIV 20 My son, pay attention to what I say; listen closely to my words. WBT 21 Let them not depart from thy eyes; keep them in the midst of thy heart. NIV 21 Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; WBT 22 For they [are] life to those that find them, and health to all their flesh. NIV 22 for they are life to those who find them and health to a man's whole body. WBT 23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it [are] the issues of life. NIV 23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. WBT 24 Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee. NIV 24 Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. WBT 25 Let thy eyes look right on, and let thy eyelids look straight before thee. NIV 25 Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. WBT 26 Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. NIV 26 Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. WBT 27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. NIV 27 Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.
