Psalm 10

CJB 1 hy, ADONAI, do you stand at a distance? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? NIV 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? CJB 2 The wicked in their arrogance hunt down the poor, who get caught in the schemes they think up. NIV 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. CJB 3 For the wicked boasts about his lusts; he blesses greed and despises ADONAI. NIV 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. CJB 4 Every scheme of the wicked in his arrogance [says], "There is no God, [so] it won't be held against me." NIV 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. CJB 5 His ways prosper at all times. Your judgments are way up there, so he takes no notice. His adversaries? He scoffs at them all. NIV 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies. CJB 6 In his heart he thinks, "I will never be shaken; I won't meet trouble, not now or ever." NIV 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble." CJB 7 His mouth is full of curses, deceit, oppression; under his tongue, mischief and injustice. NIV 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. CJB 8 He waits near settlements in ambush and kills an innocent man in secret; his eyes are on the hunt for the helpless. NIV 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims. CJB 9 Lurking unseen like a lion in his lair, he lies in wait to pounce on the poor, then seizes the poor and drags him off in his net. NIV 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. CJB 10 Yes, he stoops, crouches down low; and the helpless wretch falls into his clutches. NIV 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. CJB 11 He says in his heart, "God forgets, he hides his face, he will never see." NIV 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees." CJB 12 Arise, ADONAI! God, raise your hand! Don't forget the humble! NIV 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. CJB 13 Why does the wicked despise God and say in his heart, "It won't be held against me"? NIV 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? CJB 14 You have seen; for you look at mischief and grief, so that you can take the matter in hand. The helpless commits himself to you; you help the fatherless. NIV 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. CJB 15 Break the arm of the wicked! As for the evil man, search out his wickedness until there is none left. NIV 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out. CJB 16 ADONAI is king forever and ever! The nations have vanished from his land. NIV 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. CJB 17 ADONAI, you have heard what the humble want; you encourage them and listen to them, NIV 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, CJB 18 to give justice to the fatherless and oppressed, so that no one on earth will strike terror again. NIV 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
