Psalm 10

ESV 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far away? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? NIV 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? ESV 2 In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised. NIV 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. ESV 3 For the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul, and the one greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD. NIV 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. ESV 4 In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, "There is no God." NIV 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. ESV 5 His ways prosper at all times; your judgments are on high, out of his sight; as for all his foes, he puffs at them. NIV 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies. ESV 6 He says in his heart, "I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity." NIV 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble." ESV 7 His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. NIV 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. ESV 8 He sits in ambush in the villages; in hiding places he murders the innocent. His eyes stealthily watch for the helpless; NIV 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims. ESV 9 he lurks in ambush like a lion in his thicket; he lurks that he may seize the poor; he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net. NIV 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. ESV 10 The helpless are crushed, sink down, and fall by his might. NIV 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. ESV 11 He says in his heart, "God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it." NIV 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees." ESV 12 Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up your hand; forget not the afflicted. NIV 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. ESV 13 Why does the wicked renounce God and say in his heart, "You will not call to account"? NIV 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? ESV 14 But you do see, for you note mischief and vexation, that you may take it into your hands; to you the helpless commits himself; you have been the helper of the fatherless. NIV 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. ESV 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evildoer; call his wickedness to account till you find none. NIV 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out. ESV 16 The LORD is king forever and ever; the nations perish from his land. NIV 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. ESV 17 O LORD, you hear the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen their heart; you will incline your ear NIV 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, ESV 18 to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. NIV 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
