KJV 1 Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble? NIV 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? KJV 2 The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined . NIV 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. KJV 3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart's desire, and blesseth the covetous , whom the LORD abhorreth . NIV 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. KJV 4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. NIV 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. KJV 5 His ways are always grievous ; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies , he puffeth at them. NIV 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies. KJV 6 He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved : for I shall never be in adversity. NIV 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble." KJV 7 His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity. NIV 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. KJV 8 He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor. NIV 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims. KJV 9 He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net. NIV 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. KJV 10 He croucheth , and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong ones. NIV 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. KJV 11 He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten : he hideth his face; he will never see it. NIV 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees." KJV 12 Arise , O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble . NIV 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. KJV 13 Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it. NIV 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? KJV 14 Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless. NIV 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. KJV 15 Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none. NIV 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out. KJV 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land. NIV 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. KJV 17 LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear : NIV 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, KJV 18 To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress .
