Psalm 10

RSV 1 Why dost thou stand afar off, O LORD? Why dost thou hide thyself in times of trouble? NIV 1 Why, O LORD, do you stand far off ? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble? RSV 2 In arrogance the wicked hotly pursue the poor; let them be caught in the schemes which they have devised. NIV 2 In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak, who are caught in the schemes he devises. RSV 3 For the wicked boasts of the desires of his heart, and the man greedy for gain curses and renounces the LORD. NIV 3 He boasts of the cravings of his heart; he blesses the greedy and reviles the LORD. RSV 4 In the pride of his countenance the wicked does not seek him; all his thoughts are, "There is no God." NIV 4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God. RSV 5 His ways prosper at all times; thy judgments are on high, out of his sight; as for all his foes, he puffs at them. NIV 5 His ways are always prosperous; he is haughty and your laws are far from him; he sneers at all his enemies. RSV 6 He thinks in his heart, "I shall not be moved; throughout all generations I shall not meet adversity." NIV 6 He says to himself, "Nothing will shake me; I'll always be happy and never have trouble." RSV 7 His mouth is filled with cursing and deceit and oppression; under his tongue are mischief and iniquity. NIV 7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. RSV 8 He sits in ambush in the villages; in hiding places he murders the innocent. His eyes stealthily watch for the hapless, NIV 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims. RSV 9 he lurks in secret like a lion in his covert; he lurks that he may seize the poor, he seizes the poor when he draws him into his net. NIV 9 He lies in wait like a lion in cover; he lies in wait to catch the helpless; he catches the helpless and drags them off in his net. RSV 10 The hapless is crushed, sinks down, and falls by his might. NIV 10 His victims are crushed, they collapse; they fall under his strength. RSV 11 He thinks in his heart, "God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it." NIV 11 He says to himself, "God has forgotten; he covers his face and never sees." RSV 12 Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thy hand; forget not the afflicted. NIV 12 Arise, LORD! Lift up your hand, O God. Do not forget the helpless. RSV 13 Why does the wicked renounce God, and say in his heart, "Thou wilt not call to account"? NIV 13 Why does the wicked man revile God? Why does he say to himself, "He won't call me to account"? RSV 14 Thou dost see; yea, thou dost note trouble and vexation, that thou mayest take it into thy hands; the hapless commits himself to thee; thou hast been the helper of the fatherless. NIV 14 But you, O God, do see trouble and grief; you consider it to take it in hand. The victim commits himself to you; you are the helper of the fatherless. RSV 15 Break thou the arm of the wicked and evildoer; seek out his wickedness till thou find none. NIV 15 Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; call him to account for his wickedness that would not be found out. RSV 16 The LORD is king for ever and ever; the nations shall perish from his land. NIV 16 The LORD is King for ever and ever; the nations will perish from his land. RSV 17 O LORD, thou wilt hear the desire of the meek; thou wilt strengthen their heart, thou wilt incline thy ear NIV 17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, RSV 18 to do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, so that man who is of the earth may strike terror no more. NIV 18 defending the fatherless and the oppressed, in order that man, who is of the earth, may terrify no more.
