Psalm 140

WBT 1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man; NIV 1 Rescue me, O LORD, from evil men; protect me from men of violence, WBT 2 Who imagine mischiefs in [their] heart; continually are they assembled [for] war. NIV 2 who devise evil plans in their hearts and stir up war every day. WBT 3 They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adder's poison [is] under their lips. Selah. NIV 3 They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent's; the poison of vipers is on their lips. "Selah" WBT 4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings. NIV 4 Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; protect me from men of violence who plan to trip my feet. WBT 5 The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the way side: they have set gins for me. Selah. NIV 5 Proud men have hidden a snare for me; they have spread out the cords of their net and have set traps for me along my path. "Selah" WBT 6 I said to the LORD, Thou [art] my God: hear the voice of my supplications, O LORD. NIV 6 O LORD, I say to you, "You are my God." Hear, O LORD, my cry for mercy. WBT 7 O GOD the Lord, the strength of my salvation, thou hast covered my head in the day of battle. NIV 7 O Sovereign LORD, my strong deliverer, who shields my head in the day of battle-- WBT 8 Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked: further not his wicked device; [lest] they exalt themselves. Selah. NIV 8 do not grant the wicked their desires, O LORD; do not let their plans succeed, or they will become proud. "Selah" WBT 9 [As for] the head of those that encompass me, let the mischief of their own lips cover them. NIV 9 Let the heads of those who surround me be covered with the trouble their lips have caused. WBT 10 Let burning coals fall upon them: let them be cast into the fire; into deep pits, that they rise not again. NIV 10 Let burning coals fall upon them; may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise. WBT 11 Let not an evil speaker be established on the earth: evil shall hunt the violent man to overthrow [him]. NIV 11 Let slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down men of violence. WBT 12 I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the afflicted, [and] the right of the poor. NIV 12 I know that the LORD secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy. WBT 13 Surely the righteous shall give thanks to thy name: the upright shall dwell in thy presence. NIV 13 Surely the righteous will praise your name and the upright will live before you.
